Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) used a Sunday morning Fox News appearance to sharpen his rhetorical attack on the Democratic Party, asserting that regardless of the labels Democrats choose for their policy agenda, the underlying ideology is “essentially communism.”
Speaking on FNC’s Sunday Morning Futures with host Jason Chaffetz, Gill previewed his upcoming address at the Republican National Convention, which is set to take place this week just a few miles from his district in the greater Dallas area. The convention is designed to bolster GOP prospects in the November midterm elections.
Chaffetz teed up the segment by asking Gill about the direction of the Democratic Party, specifically citing “socialism” and “communism.” Gill responded by framing the election as a clear choice between the policies of the Trump administration and those of the Biden era.
“Do we want to continue the good work that the president has done to keep the border secure, to get the economy back on track, having brought inflation down from its peak at 9% to substantially lower, in the 2-3% range now?” Gill asked.
He contrasted that with what he described as the “America that Democrats created under the Biden administration,” citing “millions of people pouring across our southern borders,” “violent, chaotic hell holes” in cities, and inflation at 9%. Gill also claimed that prescription drug prices had dropped 60% since President Trump returned to office.
Gill then moved to his central argument: that the Democratic Party’s ideological trajectory is fundamentally at odds with American values.
“Democrats can call it whatever they want,” he said. “They can call it Democratic socialism. They can call it leftism. They can call it whatever they want, but what it really is, is essentially communism that they want for the United States.”
The congressman went further, alleging that “radical extremists” are now in control of the Democratic Party. He pointed to positions he attributed to Democratic figures, including “defunding the police,” “abolishing the presidency,” “abolishing the Senate,” and “abolishing the Department of War.”
“Those are the people who are in charge in the Democratic Party,” Gill said, “and we do not want to go back to that type of extremism that we saw under the Biden administration.”
Gill, a first-term Republican who represents Texas’s 26th Congressional District, has been a vocal supporter of President Trump and has aligned himself with the party’s conservative wing. His remarks on Sunday echo a broader Republican messaging strategy that seeks to tie Democratic candidates to progressive policies, particularly on issues of public safety and government reform.
The GOP convention, which Gill is slated to address, comes at a critical moment for the party as it seeks to defend and expand its congressional majorities.
