Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has stepped in to halt a proposal that would have used taxpayer money to install Islamic foot-washing stations at two of the state’s busiest airports, according to a report from American Thinker.
The governor on Friday directed a review of state grants to entities operating Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston after DFW said it would no longer move forward with the plan. Gov. Maura Healey, described by Widburg as “notoriously leftist,” has remained silent on the proposal, even though she would appoint two of the commission’s eleven members. The commission, if created, would mark a significant step in institutionalizing religious preferences in government employment.
Widburg argued that when a religion begins demanding preferential treatment from governments and in public spaces, the only answer can be “no.” She praised Abbott for taking a firm stand against what she sees as an encroachment on secular governance.
Federal Investigation Looms
The referral to the U.S. Department of Transportation could have implications beyond Texas. Federal investigators will examine whether the airports’ plans violated constitutional protections against establishing or favoring a particular religion.
Abbott’s directive applies to both major airports, signaling that the state is taking a hard line against what it views as unconstitutional religious accommodation. The review of state grants could result in significant financial consequences for the airports if funding is revoked.
