New York City has recorded a sharp increase in hate crimes targeting Jewish residents this year, with new NYPD data showing anti-Jewish incidents now account for more than half of all confirmed hate crimes in the city, according to a report from the New York Post.
The overall number of hate crimes in the city is up 15.8 percent compared to the same period last year, rising from 367 in 2025 to 425 so far in 2026. Of those, more than 200 were directed at Jewish New Yorkers — a group that makes up only about 10 percent of the city’s population, the Post reported.
Anti-Jewish Incidents Jump 8%
Anti-Jewish hate crimes specifically have increased by 8 percent year-over-year, according to the NYPD figures cited in the Post’s report. Jewish leaders in the city have pointed to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rhetoric on Israel as a contributing factor in the rise.
Mamdani, who took office after New Yorkers elected him in 2025, has accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza and has called for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Local Jewish community leaders say that language has helped fuel a climate in which antisemitic attacks have become more frequent, the Post reported.
The increase comes despite the city experiencing what authorities describe as its safest summer on record, a development some have attributed to federal deportation efforts targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records.
Stabbing Incident Draws Scrutiny
Mamdani’s response to a high-profile attack this summer drew criticism from Jewish leaders. After a Jewish man was stabbed in the city, the mayor’s initial public reaction was to attribute the attack to the assailant’s “mental health.” However, the accused attacker reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the incident and is also alleged to have stabbed an Asian man, raising questions about the motivation behind the attack, according to the Post.
High Holy Days Security Concerns
The surge in anti-Jewish hate crimes comes at a particularly sensitive moment, with the Jewish High Holy Days set to begin next week. This year, the holidays coincide with September 11 — the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon — which has prompted heightened security concerns for synagogues and Jewish schools across the country.
The trend is not confined to New York City. Nationally, Jews are the target of 63 percent of all anti-religious hate crimes, despite accounting for less than 3 percent of the U.S. population, according to federal data cited in the Post’s report.
Jewish community organizations in New York have called for increased police presence around synagogues and Jewish institutions ahead of the holiday period, urging the city to take the threat seriously.
