Illinois Mother Charged with Murder After 2-Year-Old Found Hanging in Basement

An Illinois mother has been charged with murder after her 2-year-old son was found dead in the basement of their home earlier this week, according to Frankfort police.

Corie A. Walsh, 38, was formally charged Friday in connection with the death of her toddler. The child was discovered unresponsive Tuesday afternoon in the basement of a home on the 22700-block of Brook Stone Court in Frankfort, a southwest Chicago suburb.

Police say the child was hanging from rafters in the basement when officers arrived. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The 911 Call and Scene

Authorities said a 17-year-old placed the 911 call just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Walsh attempting to harm herself, according to police.

Walsh was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said she will be transferred to the Will County Jail once she is medically cleared.

Three other children who were at the home were found unharmed, police said.

Comments to Investigators

According to authorities, Walsh told investigators that she believed her son was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” The statement has drawn comparisons to the high-profile trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three children in 2023.

A witness told police that Walsh appeared to be “very interested” in the Clancy trial, which has garnered national attention over the past several months.

The Clancy case, which involved similar allegations of postpartum psychosis and distorted religious ideation, has become a reference point for investigators and mental health experts examining similar tragedies.

Investigation and Charges

The Frankfort Police Department announced Friday that the incident was being investigated as a homicide. Walsh now faces one count of first-degree murder, though additional charges could follow as the investigation continues.

Police have not yet released details about the child’s identity or the exact cause of death, pending an autopsy by the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Neighbors and family members of Walsh have declined to speak publicly. Officials say the three other children are safe and in the care of family members or child welfare authorities.

The case has renewed conversations about maternal mental health resources and warning signs in households where children may be at risk. Experts urge anyone in crisis to contact national suicide prevention and crisis hotlines.

Walsh is expected to appear in court in the coming days, where a judge will determine bail and set a preliminary hearing date.

Further updates from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office are anticipated as the legal process unfolds.
