A routine attempt to snag a rookie's milestone football turned into a sideline shouting match on Sunday when a Jacksonville staffer refused to hand over the ball.

Jaguars' Josh Hines-Allen Clashes With Ball Boy Over Travis Hunter's First Interception Ball

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A simple act of teammate solidarity devolved into a bizarre sideline confrontation Sunday when Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Josh Hines-Allen tried to retrieve the football from Travis Hunter’s first career NFL interception — and a ball boy refused to give it up.

According to Breitbart Sports, the incident unfolded immediately after Hunter, the Jaguars’ top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, picked off a pass and spun the ball on the turf before running off to celebrate. Hines-Allen, a veteran linebacker and one of the faces of the franchise, decided the rookie might want the ball as a keepsake of his milestone moment.

There was just one problem: an NFL ball boy had already scooped it up.

A Request Denied

Hines-Allen extended his hands and asked for the ball. The ball collector refused. The linebacker then reached for it, drawing a stiff arm from the sideline staffer, who shouted that the player could not touch him.

“You can’t touch me! Hey! He pushed me!” the ball boy shouted, according to Breitbart’s account of the video.

Rather than escalate the physical exchange, Hines-Allen appeared to lean into the absurdity of the moment. After being warned repeatedly about touching the staffer, he gave him a pat on the back. The gesture only seemed to agitate the ball boy further, who shouted the warnings even louder and tried to explain the situation to another staffer who stepped between Hines-Allen and the ball.

As of Breitbart’s report, it remains unclear whether the ball ever made its way to Hunter. The video shows the ball boy never surrendering it to Hines-Allen or any other member of the Jaguars team or staff.

An Unusual Standoff

The episode is strange by NFL norms. Ball boys typically hand over game balls when players ask for them, particularly after a significant play. Retrieving milestone footballs for players is common practice across the league, with sideline staff generally cooperating to preserve keepsakes for the men who earned them.

That norm is precisely what makes the incident notable. It is highly unusual for a ball collector to physically resist a player’s request — and rarer still for the standoff to be caught on video and broadcast across social media.

Hines-Allen, for his part, likely didn’t realize the ball might carry extra meaning for the rookie, or that his attempt to secure it would draw such a reaction. He also shouldn’t have touched the staffer after being warned — a point that cuts against the linebacker’s hand in the exchange. Still, the simplest resolution was available from the start: the ball boy could have handed over the ball.

The confrontation did not appear to involve any penalties or on-field consequences for the Jaguars, based on the available video and reporting.

The Hunter Milestone

Hunter’s interception was the play that set everything in motion — a rare bright spot for a Jacksonville team whose fans have been waiting for the two-way star to deliver a signature moment. The 2025 draft’s top selection, Hunter has been one of the most-watched rookies in the league, and his first NFL pick represented exactly the kind of play Jaguars faithful in “Duval” had been anticipating.

Whether he’ll ever get the ball as a memento is now an open question, left unresolved in the footage circulating Monday.

The incident adds another layer to a season full of storylines for Jacksonville. Hines-Allen, a team leader, found himself in the middle of a sideline spectacle he never intended to create. The ball boy, meanwhile, became an unlikely viral figure after refusing to part with a football that belonged — at least symbolically — to a rookie who had just made his first big play.

For now, the only certainty is that the ball stayed where it was, and the argument that followed was louder than the play that started it.
