House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) declined to take impeachment off the table should Democrats win back the House in the midterms, telling ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday that the party has “not ruled anything in and we haven’t ruled anything out in terms of impeachment.”
Jeffries made the remarks during an interview with anchor George Stephanopoulos, according to a clip published by Breitbart News. The exchange came as the Democratic leader pressed his party’s economic message while leaving the door open to potential accountability proceedings against the Trump administration.
An Economic Pitch First
Asked about the party’s priorities, Jeffries said Democrats are singularly focused on winning back the majority so they can address the cost of living. He listed lowering the cost of gas, groceries, and housing, as well as making health care affordable, as core goals.
“That is the only mission that’s important,” Jeffries said, adding that Democrats would work to “combat the unprecedented corruption that’s been unleashed on the American people, and beginning on day one, hold the crooks accountable.”
The phrase “hold the crooks accountable” caught Stephanopoulos’s attention, prompting him to press Jeffries on whether that meant the House would move toward impeachment immediately upon taking power.
No Day-One Commitment, but No Shut Door
Jeffries resisted the idea that impeachment would be a day-one endeavor but did not foreclose it. “As it relates to accountability, what we’re going to do, led by Jamie Raskin and House Committee Democrats on the Judiciary Committee, as well as House Democrats on the Oversight Committee led by Robert Garcia,” he said, “we’ve got to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution, and then let the chips fall where they may, in the best interests of the American people.”
He framed the effort as restoring the House’s role as a co-equal branch of government and a check on what he called an “out-of-control executive branch.”
The comments echo a familiar Democratic posture from the first Trump administration, when party leaders often avoided committing to impeachment while promising rigorous oversight. Now, with control of the House up for grabs in the midterms, Jeffries is balancing his party’s economic message against pressure from a base that has repeatedly demanded aggressive action against the administration.
Jeffries’s appearance on ABC’s Sunday program is part of a broader Democratic effort to nationalize the midterm elections around affordability and governance. By declining to rule impeachment in or out, the minority leader keeps both options available — and keeps the spotlight on the House’s oversight committees, which would be the likely starting point for any formal proceedings.
Whether that approach satisfies Democratic voters eager for confrontation remains an open question. For now, Jeffries is signaling that the party’s immediate focus is winning the majority, with the specifics of accountability left to the committee process and, ultimately, the evidence.
