Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) said the Republican Party’s path to success in November’s midterm elections runs through a three-part message: promote the country, tout the Trump administration’s record, and warn voters that the “radical left” has seized control of the Democratic Party.
Jordan made the comments Wednesday during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle,” where he praised GOP Sens. Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania and Eric Schmitt of Missouri for their speeches at the Republican National Convention underway in Dallas.
According to Breitbart, which first reported the remarks, Jordan argued that Republicans need to both highlight what the Trump administration has accomplished and remind voters how far left the opposition party has moved.
A three-part midterm pitch
Host Laura Ingraham opened the segment by pointing to what she described as the real-world benefits of the administration’s deportation policies. She noted that roughly 3 million people have been deported or left the country voluntarily, and argued that rents are stabilizing, more housing is available, and hospitals and schools are no longer overburdened.
Jordan agreed and expanded on what he saw as the party’s core messaging strategy.
He credited McCormick with framing the first pillar: reminding voters “what a great country it is,” calling the United States the “best country ever” and the “greatest nation in history.”
The second pillar, Jordan said, is the administration’s record — cutting taxes and securing the border, the latter of which he noted Schmitt had emphasized. “Talk about the things we told them we were going to do, and that we accomplished,” Jordan said.
The third and final piece, he continued, is reminding voters “just how radical the left has become” — an argument Jordan capped by asserting that the left “now fully control[s] the Democrat Party.”
GOP gathers in Dallas
Jordan’s remarks came as Republicans gathered in Dallas for their national convention, with McCormick and Schmitt among the featured speakers. The Ohio congressman’s comments reflect a broader Republican effort to nationalize the midterm elections around both the Trump administration’s policy wins and a characterization of the modern Democratic Party as captive to its most progressive faction.
The strategy carries risks and rewards. Incumbents typically face headwinds in midterm elections, particularly when their party holds the White House, and turnout and enthusiasm can swing sharply. Republicans are betting that a message centered on border security, taxes, and the opposition’s ideological direction will resonate with the voters they need in competitive districts and states.
Democrats have consistently rejected the characterization that their party is controlled by its left flank, arguing that Republicans use the label as a broad brush to avoid debating policy on the merits. They point to their own legislative priorities and a coalition that spans the ideological spectrum.
For now, Jordan’s appearance offers one of the clearest windows into how Republican leaders intend to frame the final weeks before voters head to the polls — an argument built as much on defining the opposition as on defending their own record.
