Former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said this week that members of the White House press corps have privately apologized to her for questions they asked on camera, describing a briefing room culture in which reporters answer to corporate bosses rather than their own news judgment.
Leavitt, who stepped down from the press secretary role last month, made the comments Tuesday during an appearance on Fox News with Sean Hannity, according to The Daily Wire. Leavitt describes a ‘performative’ briefing room
According to The Daily Wire’s account, Leavitt said there is a significant “performative aspect” to the daily White House briefing, with correspondents playing to the cameras for nightly soundbites. She described a pattern in which reporters acknowledge to her off-air that the questions they posed were driven by their employers rather than by their own instincts.
She said reporters have told her things like, “I’m sorry I had to ask that today,” explaining that their bosses wanted the question put to her. In her telling, those journalists recognize the question was unfair but feel they have limited control over their own jobs.
“They have to do that because their bosses are demanding it,” Leavitt said, per The Daily Wire. She added that those reporters are “dictated by the editors and the execs at some of these companies.”

The move followed a Truth Social post from President Donald Trump last Friday announcing that the three outlets were banned, writing that they produce “FICTION and LIES” and adding, “I don’t want them in my office. I don’t want them here.” Trump also suggested that outlets such as The New York Times and The Washington Post could be next.
Trump singled out Politico for criticism, pointing to what he described as an “illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription” arrangement funded by taxpayers during the Biden administration. Leavitt had previously raised concerns about large USAID-funded subscriptions in early 2025 alongside Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency effort, according to The Daily Wire.
Outlets cry foul as First Amendment fight looms
CNN and MS NOW characterized the ban as an unconstitutional attack on press freedom, per The Daily Wire’s reporting. The dispute sets up a legal clash over the boundaries of White House access, with precedent stretching back to a 1977 federal appeals decision and a 2018 court fight over CNN reporter Jim Acosta, when a court barred the White House from stripping credentials based on an outlet’s coverage.
