Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to two federal charges and admitted to shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to court statements reported by Breitbart News.
In a statement read in court, Mangione said he traveled to New York with the intent to shoot Thompson, and acknowledged that he understood his actions would place Thompson in fear of death or severe bodily injury. Mangione’s statement described years of severe pain from a broken back and obstacles navigating the health insurance system, but noted that he was never a UnitedHealthcare customer.
The guilty plea marks a reversal of his earlier not guilty plea. Mangione now faces a potential sentence of life in prison, with sentencing scheduled for December 18.
Mangione pleaded guilty to charges of interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. Both charges carry a possible life sentence.
Last year, then-Attorney General Pam Bondi sought the death penalty for Mangione. However, earlier this year, a judge dismissed charges of murder through use of a firearm and use of a firearm with a silencer to commit a crime of violence, both of which carried a possible death sentence if convicted.
Mangione is still scheduled for a state trial in New York on September 8, facing second-degree murder charges along with four other felony counts. Observers note that double jeopardy protections may apply following the federal guilty pleas, potentially leading to dismissal of the state charges.
Brian Thompson, 50, was married and the father of two sons when he was shot and killed in December 2024.
As of now, there is no indication that Mangione has expressed remorse for the killing.
