Melania Trump Brings Green Leather and Robotics Kits to Hurricane-Hit Ashe County

Melania Trump Brings Green Leather and Robotics Kits to Hurricane-Hit Ashe County

Melania Trump touched down at Ashe County Airport on Tuesday for a return visit to western North Carolina, stepping off the plane in a deep green Nour Hammour leather jacket that seemed picked to echo the surrounding Blue Ridge hills. According to Breitbart News, which covered the trip, she paired the jacket with an ivory ribbed sweater and a pinstriped pencil skirt from Adam Lippes โ€” the designer behind her inaugural look โ€” and finished the outfit with green python Manolo Blahnik pumps.

The visit, reported by Breitbart, centered on Ashe County’s recovery from Hurricane Helene, the storm that tore through the region in September 2024. Nearly two years on, the First Lady’s stop at Mountain View Elementary School was framed around what comes after the rebuilding.

A Classroom Full of Hardware

Inside the school, Mrs. Trump spoke to students and handed out AI Literacy training licenses and Robotics Learning Kits, distributed through her BE BEST initiative’s Fostering the Future program. She also spent time in a classroom meeting children directly and posed for photos with them, at one point embracing a student.

Her remarks to the students leaned on the idea that access to technology and training is its own form of recovery. “Knowledge gives everyone in this town the chance to move beyond Helene and to imagine new possibilities,” she told them, according to Breitbart. “It gives the next generation the choice to help create a beautiful world in the futureโ€”a better America. That is the lasting spirit of America. We may face hard times, but we do not fail. We choose to grow like a rare young flower pushing through the cold earth after a storm.”

The school visit was described by pool photographers traveling with her as a chance to see how Mountain View Elementary is using technology in its classrooms โ€” the kits and licenses functioning as both a gift and a demonstration of what that technology can look like in practice.

Why Western North Carolina

Helene’s damage across the North Carolina mountains in late September 2024 was among the worst the region has seen, and the recovery has stretched well past the immediate emergency phase. Ashe County, tucked into the state’s northwestern corner along the Virginia line, sits in the broader area that absorbed flooding and infrastructure losses. A First Lady’s visit two years later is, in part, a marker of how long that recovery arc runs.

Mrs. Trump has made several trips to the region since the storm, and Tuesday’s stop kept the focus on children and classrooms rather than the harder logistics of rebuilding roads and homes. The imagery from the day โ€” the First Lady in mountain-green leather, waving as she departed, walking to her vehicle on the tarmac โ€” put the visual emphasis on a town looking forward rather than back.

Pool photographers from AFP and Getty Images documented the arrival, the classroom visit and her departure. Kent Nishimura shot the pool images for AFP; Nishimura-Pool handled the Getty frames.

Sartorial Signaling, Again

Mrs. Trump’s wardrobe has long been read as a kind of parallel text on her public appearances, and Tuesday’s choices fit the pattern. The Nour Hammour jacket’s deep green was described as a nod to North Carolina’s lush mountainscape, with the python pumps adding a sharp contrast to the ribbed ivory knit beneath. Adam Lippes, whose work she wore for the inauguration, returned for the skirt.

Whether the outfit was meant to say anything beyond color-coordination with the landscape is, as ever, a matter of interpretation. What’s less ambiguous is the itinerary: a school, a classroom of kids, and a pile of technology handed over in a county still working its way out of a storm’s shadow.

The First Lady’s message to the students did not linger on the hurricane itself so much as on what she hopes comes after it. Growth, in her telling, is the point โ€” the flower through the cold earth, as she put it, rather than the wreckage it pushes past.

Breitbart’s John Binder reported on the trip.
