Mélenchon Leads 150,000-Strong Paris Protest as Police Warn of 'Insurrectional' Halloween Violence

French far-left presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon positioned himself at the forefront of massive demonstrations in Paris on Saturday, as authorities warned of an “insurrectional situation” and deployed tens of thousands of police officers across the country.

The Paris Police prefecture estimated between 100,000 and 150,000 demonstrators participated in the march from Porte de Bagnolet and Porte de Charenton in the French capital. The 75-year-old leader of France Insoumise (France in Rebellion/LFI) was greeted by crowds chanting “Mélenchon, president!” according to Le Figaro.

The demonstration comes as Mélenchon has surged into second place in the race to replace President Emmanuel Macron next spring, trailing only Marine Le Pen of the National Rally party, who maintains a commanding lead in polling.

Violence Erupts Despite Peaceful Start

While the morning procession remained largely peaceful, clashes between rioters and police broke out later in the day. On Rue des Meuniers, officers came under attack from protesters hurling stones and chanting “ACAB” (All Cops Are Bastards). Police responded by firing tear gas into the crowd in an attempt to disperse the violent demonstrators, who had begun setting fires and damaging street advertisements, Le Figaro reported.

The escalation came despite Mélenchon’s public call for peaceful protest. The far-left leader claimed he was advocating for peace while attempting to cast what he called the “far-right” as the violent faction in France, referencing a shooting in the multicultural suburb of Trappes earlier this month.

Government Accuses LFI of Stoking Unrest

Mélenchon and other members of his party face accusations from the government of having manipulated what began as small-scale student-teacher demonstrations at high schools into a nationwide revolt. The unrest has resulted in billions in damages over the past month.

The LFI has also faced allegations of attempting to destabilize the presidential election and staging a show of force to intimidate voters should Le Pen win. “I will go to Porte de Bagnolet, responding to the call of the high school students’ unions, students, salaried workers’ union confederations, and the Yellow Vests,” Mélenchon said before the march. “With the Insoumis, we will support the demands for decent study conditions and against the high cost of living.”

He added that he wanted to “uphold the right to demonstrate peacefully at a time when the Macron camp is veering into authoritarian mode.”

Intelligence Warnings About Ultra-Left and Suburban Alliance

Authorities expressed particular concern about the potential for what they described as an “insurrectional situation” involving an alliance between hardened “ultra-left” radicals and multicultural youth from ethnic minority enclaves in the suburbs. Between 300 and 600 ultra-left radicals were expected to be present in Paris on Saturday.

A report from French intelligence services last week detailed a street alliance between radical groups like Antifa and young men “who came in large numbers from the neighbourhoods out of opportunism.” The report estimated around 5,000 trained Antifa provocateurs operate in the country, typically sparking violence at demonstrations by attacking police or government buildings. Meanwhile, youth from multicultural suburbs were identified as the predominant force behind looting of businesses.

Massive Security Response

In response to the threat, authorities deployed approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes ahead of the demonstrations. Paris shopkeepers were seen boarding up storefronts preemptively, particularly after devastating looting on October 17 resulted in over $1.3 billion in damages to French businesses and government property.

Cities across France braced for potential unrest. In Nantes, local authorities described Saturday as a “high-risk day, with the convergence of thugs and looters, who will be able to join the demonstrators, using the pretext of Halloween.” Police in Marseille uncovered a cache of Halloween masks and knives in apparent preparation for evening violence.

Protests Spread Beyond France

The demonstrations extended beyond French borders, with protests also held in other European countries where leftist groups have sought to emulate the French revolt, including Germany, Italy, and Spain.

The unrest in France has dramatically reshaped the presidential race, with Mélenchon’s visibility during the month-long period of demonstrations propelling him past other candidates. However, Marine Le Pen continues to hold what polling suggests is a growing lead as the spring election approaches.

The convergence of student protests, Yellow Vest demonstrations, labor union actions, and Halloween celebrations created what security officials viewed as a volatile mix, with the potential for organized radical groups to exploit the large crowds for political violence.
