Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the 75-year-old leader of La France Insoumise (LFI), is now positioned to reach the second round of France’s presidential election next year, according to a new poll that shows him surpassing the centrist establishment—though he still trails far-right leader Marine Le Pen in head-to-head matchups.
The survey, conducted by Ipsos-BVA and reported by Le Journal du Dimanche, found that Mélenchon would qualify for the runoff against Le Pen in four of six hypothetical candidate fields, capturing between 15.5 and 17 percent of the vote. The election to replace outgoing President Emmanuel Macron is seven months away.
A Thirst for Change
The poll suggests both Le Pen and Mélenchon are benefiting from a electorate hungry for a break from the status quo. Seventy-one percent of French respondents said they want “real social and political change,” up sharply from 51 percent during the 2022 presidential campaign.
That mood has not lifted the fortunes of Édouard Philippe, the former prime minister and current mayor of Le Havre whom French legacy media have widely promoted as the liberal camp’s best hope of defeating Le Pen. Philippe reached the second round in only two of the six scenarios tested. Those scenarios were the ones in which he was the sole representative of the centrist bloc—without figures like former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal splitting the vote.
Mélenchon, a socialist firebrand often compared to Bernie Sanders in the United States or Jeremy Corbyn in the United Kingdom, appears set to be the main standard-bearer of the French left. His supporters point to the Ipsos-BVA findings as evidence of momentum.
The Second-Round Problem
But the same poll did not measure second-round voting preferences, and other surveys that have done so paint a grim picture for Mélenchon. A separate Elabe poll conducted last month found that he would be Le Pen’s easiest opponent, predicting a National Rally victory by a margin of 69.5 percent to 30.5 percent.
By contrast, more moderate candidates would tighten the race considerably. Elabe found Le Pen besting Attal by 57 percent to 43 percent and Philippe by 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent.
Given that disparity, and the peculiarities of France’s two-round electoral system enacted after World War II, tactical voting agreements could conceivably be forged to block Mélenchon from reaching the runoff. Should that happen, it remains unclear whether his loyal base would rally behind a more centrist candidate to keep Le Pen from power.
With seven months to go, Mélenchon’s pole position is far from guaranteed—especially given his propensity for controversy.
Legal Trouble and Controversial Comments
The LFI leader, a vocal advocate of mass migration who has publicly stated his support for the so-called Great Replacement theory, is currently facing a complaint at the Paris judicial court over alleged anti-white racism. The complaint stems from comments he made earlier this year in which the Moroccan-born, Spanish-Sicilian migrant suggested that French culture only achieved its heights due to Muslim influence and that modern French people act “smart, all white, all ugly as you are.”
The controversy underscores the challenges Mélenchon would face in a general election, where he would need to broaden his appeal beyond his left-wing base. It also highlights the unpredictable nature of a race that, with seven months remaining, still has ample time to shift.
For now, the Ipsos-BVA survey offers the clearest snapshot yet of a French electorate leaning toward disruption. Whether that translates into a Mélenchon-Le Pen runoff—and what happens if it does—remains an open question.
