A North Carolina Democratic candidate for the state legislature is facing scrutiny after a Facebook story surfaced in which she appears to say that Trump supporters belong in the ovens of a former Nazi concentration camp, according to reporting by Breitbart News.
Shelly Headen, who is running against incumbent Republican state Rep. John Blust in a suburban Guilford County district, posted the item while on a trip to Germany. In the post, she is shown standing and smiling in front of what appear to be the crematorium ovens at the Dachau memorial site — the same ovens the Nazi SS used to burn the bodies of Jews and other prisoners who died or were murdered at the camp.
The caption, as quoted by Breitbart, reads: “Visiting Dauchau [sic] Concentration Camp in Germany…..This is where Trump supporters belong.” The memorial at Dachau states that 41,500 people were murdered there. Six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust.
A Campaign Pledge of ‘Human Decency’
Headen’s campaign Facebook page describes her as a CPA and business owner who is “running to restore human decency.” That message now sits uneasily alongside a post that explicitly calls for her political opponents to be placed in a concentration camp — and a photograph of her smiling at the site of mass murder.
The apparent call to burn Trump supporters is not the only social media post drawing attention. In another Facebook post, Headen appears to call for an unspecified terrorist attack against the United States, writing, “I think our only hope is an attack on US soil… preferably Alabama, Louisiana… where the stupid people are.”
Breitbart reported that Headen has also faced domestic assault allegations in which her husband is listed as the “potential victim.” A pair of what appear to be law enforcement incident and investigation reports from 2024 list Headen as the suspect in both cases.
In a statement on September 3, Headen addressed the domestic violence allegations, saying: “In 2024, during a high-stress time in my marriage, my husband and I had a couple of arguments that escalated. During one argument, my husband grabbed me, and I fell backward and hit my head. In my fear and confusion, I sought support and protection from those I trusted—I called 911.”
That account conflicts with police documentation, which notes two separate law enforcement visits — not one — in both of which Headen is listed as the suspect and her husband as the “potential victim.”
A Broader Pattern on the Left?
The rhetoric expressed by Headen fits what Breitbart describes as a growing trend among Democratic candidates and left-wing agitators across the country. The outlet pointed to earlier events, including a gunman who attempted to break through security — presumably to assassinate President Trump — at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner earlier this year. Breitbart also cited Michigan Muslim socialist candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who said, in response to an attack on a Jewish synagogue in his state, “Hurt people hurt people.”
Headen has not responded to Breitbart’s request for comment on her inflammatory Facebook posts or for clarification on the domestic violence allegations. The campaign had not replied by press time.
The race in Guilford County is one of many state legislative contests across North Carolina this cycle, but Headen’s social media history has now drawn national attention. Her posts raise questions about the tone of political discourse and the boundaries of acceptable rhetoric from candidates seeking public office.
Breitbart’s report includes photographs from the Dachau memorial site showing the ovens, as well as historical images of American soldiers at the camp after its liberation in April–May 1945. The juxtaposition — a candidate for public office smiling before instruments of genocide while calling for her political opponents to be brought there — is likely to fuel further controversy in the weeks ahead.
Headen’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment from Breitbart News. This outlet has not independently verified the Facebook posts.
