Netflix Axes 3% of London Staff in Global Layoffs, Top UK Exec Exits

Netflix’s wave of layoffs has now hit its London headquarters, with the streaming giant cutting approximately 3% of its UK workforce according to industry reports. The cuts come as Anna Mallett, Vice President of UK and EMEA production, has exited the company.

Mallett, who previously led ITN and held senior roles at BBC Studios, oversaw Netflix’s production of British hits like Baby Reindeer and Adolescence during her tenure. Her departure coincides with Netflix replacing global content chief Bela Bajaria with former 21st Century Fox president Peter Rice, signaling potential further organizational changes.

Leadership Insists Business as Usual

Despite the layoffs and executive shuffle, Netflix co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos maintain that international operations remain strong. “The quality, quantity and variety of viewing remains healthy and it drives our business model,” Peters said during a recent earnings call, pointing to stable subscriber retention across regions.

The co-CEO emphasized that local content continues to perform well globally, stating: “Our local titles from those regions are driving engagement and they’re driving business growth. And you can see how our business model works here.”

Latest in Series of Cuts

This round follows Netflix’s elimination of about 1,000 positions (6% of its workforce) last month – the company’s largest staff reduction since 2022. The layoffs come as data suggests many Netflix originals lose over half their audience after just one season, raising questions about the sustainability of its content strategy.

With Rice’s appointment and continued restructuring, industry watchers anticipate further changes to Netflix’s international production approach as it balances cost-cutting with its global content ambitions.
