LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles County grand jury has indicted Nick Reiner on murder charges in the stabbing deaths of his parents, actor and director Rob Reiner and photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, according to court records unsealed Wednesday.
The indictment, returned July 20 after the panel met in secret, adds a special allegation that Reiner was lying in wait before attacking his parents at their Brentwood home on Dec. 14. Reiner entered a not guilty plea Wednesday when the indictment was unsealed.
Reiner, 43, was arrested hours after the killings and formally charged two days later. The case has largely proceeded behind closed doors, with authorities disclosing few details about the attack that shocked Hollywood and the wider entertainment world.
What the Indictment Means
The grand jury indictment moves the case directly toward trial, allowing prosecutors to bypass California’s preliminary hearing process, which would have aired evidence publicly. The unsealed indictment reveals few new details, but the lying-in-wait allegation — combined with other circumstances — makes Reiner eligible for the death penalty, prosecutors said. His wife of many years, Michele Singer Reiner, 76, was a photographer and producer who worked on several of his projects.
A Family Tragedy
The couple’s deaths were discovered when authorities responded to their home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on the morning of Dec. 14. Nick Reiner, one of the couple’s three children, was taken into custody later that day.
The case has drawn intense media attention, in part because of the Reiner family’s prominent place in Hollywood history. Rob Reiner’s father was Carl Reiner, the legendary comedian and writer. The family’s public profile stands in sharp contrast to the privacy that has surrounded the legal proceedings.

The trial, when it comes, is expected to draw significant attention, both for the celebrity involved and for the grim nature of the allegations — a son charged with killing his own parents in their home.
The case remains under a protective order that limits what attorneys on both sides may say publicly. A status conference is scheduled for later this month.
