A chilling case out of Cincinnati has left even veteran homicide detectives shaken, as an Ohio mother and her two transgender lovers face charges for the torture and murder of her seven-year-old disabled son. The boy’s body was discovered duct-taped inside a closet in the mother’s home, and the gruesome details have sparked outrage and grief across the nation.
The victim, William Evans, was found dead by police last week. According to the Hamilton County Coroner, Lakshmi Sammarco, the official cause of death was blunt trauma to the head. Sammarco, who has seen her share of tragedy, admitted that the scene left her momentarily incapacitated. Despite donning what she called her “emotional armor,” she told journalists that when she opened the closet door and saw the boy, she “just froze for a while.”
Detective Kyle Smith, a 21-year veteran of homicide investigations, testified in court on Friday that this case is among the most disturbing he has ever encountered. “In my 21 years of law enforcement experience, this is probably one of the most disturbing examples of child abuse that I’ve witnessed: physical beatings and blunt force injuries from striking devices on the face, torso, back, and upper and lower extremities,” he told the court, as reported by FOX19.
Authorities allege that the boy was subjected to a horrific pattern of abuse, including being burned, beaten, and waterboarded. The coroner’s report detailed evidence of abuse all over the child’s body, with “too many bruises to count,” according to the Daily Mail. The medical examiner also noted that the boy’s skull was so severely fractured that bone had separated, and police are still searching for a possible weapon. Sexual abuse has not been ruled out, police said.
The Accused
The boy’s mother, Kaitlin Evans, 38, along with her live-in transgender partners, Nessa Keaney, 23, and Kirby Rankin, 33, were arrested last week. They face murder and child endangerment charges. Prosecutors described the trio as lovers and roommates who co-parented the child. All three remain in custody with bond set at $1 million each.
The case has garnered widespread attention, with video of the coroner’s report and the suspects’ court appearances going viral on social media. The disturbing details have resonated deeply with the public, prompting discussions about child abuse, domestic violence, and the failures of systems meant to protect vulnerable children.
A Father’s Anguish
The boy’s father, who has not been charged and is also reported to be transgender, addressed the mother directly in court. Overcome with emotion, he sobbed, “Willie was my life. I trusted you to care for him.” He added, “They kept him from me for the past nine months over lies,” as reported by the New York Post.
Defense attorney Brandon Fox, representing the mother, has indicated that evidence will show one of the other charged individuals “caused the death of this child.” He suggested that the state’s theory will likely focus on the mother’s “failure to act” rather than direct infliction of harm.
As the legal proceedings continue, the community mourns the loss of a young life and seeks justice for William Evans. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and the need to protect the most vulnerable among us.
