Oprah Distances Herself From Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz Over Their Trump Ties

In a new interview, Oprah Winfrey addresses criticism over launching the careers of Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz, insisting their political paths are their own — a comment that comes as both men have aligned with the Trump movement.

Oprah Distances Herself From Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz Over Their Trump Ties

Oprah Winfrey is pushing back on the notion that she bears responsibility for the political trajectories of two men she helped make famous — Dr. Phil McGraw and Dr. Mehmet Oz. In a recent interview, Winfrey addressed the criticism she has faced for giving both men a platform, a topic that has grown more charged as both have aligned with former President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement.

According to a magazine interviewer who asked Winfrey how she feels now about having given Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz their big breaks, Winfrey responded by emphasizing that their choices in life are not hers to own. “Everybody has their own path in life,” she said, “and it has not one thing to do with me, and I don’t have one thing to do with them.”

The remarks come as Dr. Oz now serves as President Trump’s Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a role that has placed him at the center of the administration’s health policy. Dr. Phil, meanwhile, has been vocal in his support of the MAGA movement, a stance that has put him at odds with many in the entertainment world who once celebrated his pragmatic daytime advice.

A Legacy Under Scrutiny

Winfrey launched both careers from her iconic talk show, giving them a platform that turned them into household names. In the interview, she reflected on why she first brought them on air, describing Dr. Phil as “so practical, so down to earth, so real” and praising his role “in helping me” before adding that she thought, “Oh, you could help a lot of people. You should come on my show.”

Of Dr. Oz, she recalled that he “explained practical things like colon cancer and bowel movements. I thought he had the language for explaining medical things in a way that was helpful to me.” She added that she believed his insights would be helpful to many others, “and that is how they ended up on the show.”

Winfrey’s framing suggests she sees her original intent as purely benevolent — an effort to share valuable information with her audience. She repeated that sentiment while distancing herself from the men’s current political affiliations: “At the time, the reason and intention behind me giving them their breaks was I thought they had valuable information to share that had been meaningful to me.”

The subtext is hard to miss. Both Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz have embraced a political identity that Winfrey does not share, and the criticism she faces, she suggests, stems from their politics, not from her actions.

Criticism From the Right

Conservative commentators have not taken kindly to Winfrey’s response. Writing for Breitbart, John Nolte accused Winfrey of acting as though the two men “had gone bad” and of dodging responsibility for their rise. Nolte noted that Winfrey has a long history of backing Democratic candidates — including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris — and suggested that her distancing is politically motivated.

Nolte also painted Winfrey as a former populist who has “sold out” to the elite, a charge he leveled in harsh terms, calling her “divisive, negative, narcissistic, mean-spirited, and lacking grace towards anyone who votes differently.”

Whether or not one agrees with that assessment, the interview highlights a curious tension in Winfrey’s public persona. She has long claimed to be apolitical, yet her career has been marked by high-profile political endorsements and donations. Her comments about Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz, while carefully worded, signal a clear desire to disentangle herself from their political choices.

A Changing Landscape

The dynamic between Winfrey and the two men reflects a broader cultural shift in which entertainment and politics have become nearly inseparable. When Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz first appeared on Winfrey’s show in the early 2000s, the idea that they would later become political lightning rods seemed remote. Dr. Phil was known for his no-nonsense advice, and Dr. Oz for his accessible medical explanations. But as the country has polarized, so have their public personas.

Dr. Oz’s foray into politics began with a failed Senate run in Pennsylvania in 2022, where he was endorsed by Trump and narrowly lost to Democrat John Fetterman — a race in which Winfrey backed Fetterman. That race, in particular, underscored the political distance that had grown between Winfrey and her former protégés. Dr. Oz’s subsequent appointment to a high-ranking role in the Trump administration cemented his alignment with the MAGA movement.

Dr. Phil, for his part, has become a vocal supporter of Trump, appearing at rallies and speaking sympathetically about the president. His transformation from daytime psychologist to political commentator has been jarring for many longtime viewers, and it has placed him in direct opposition to the entertainment industry’s dominant liberal culture.

For Winfrey, the challenge lies in defending her past decisions without endorsing her protégés’ current paths. Her insistence that their choices have “not one thing to do with me” is a carefully measured attempt to preserve her legacy while acknowledging that the bond once shared with these men has frayed.

A Personal Reflection

Winfrey’s comments also reveal a more personal dimension. She spoke of Dr. Phil as someone “instrumental in helping” her, a nod to the psychologist’s role in her own life during a difficult period. Yet even that acknowledgment came with a qualifier — “I thought, ‘Oh, you could help a lot of people’” — as if to clarify that her motive was never self-serving.

Similarly, her recollection of Dr. Oz’s practical medical advice seemed designed to counter claims that she should have known better. By emphasizing that she found his explanations helpful, she implies that any cautionary tale about Dr. Oz’s later embrace of unproven treatments or political ideology is hindsight bias.

The interview stops short of a full break, but the message is clear: Oprah Winfrey does not want to be held accountable for the political lives of the men she launched. Whether her audience accepts that separation is another matter. In an era when every public figure is scrutinized for their associations, the question of what we owe to those we elevate is one Winfrey’s comments — intentionally or not — have opened up for renewed debate.
