A newly surfaced recording has thrust Nebraska’s Senate race into a fresh controversy, with Republican incumbent Pete Ricketts seizing on leaked audio in which independent candidate Dan Osborn appears to mock rural Trump voters as people whose “lives probably suck” and who back the president simply to feel like they are “on the winning team.”
The Republican National Committee circulated the audio on Wednesday, according to The Gateway Pundit. In the clip, Osborn — who has built his campaign around a blue-collar, working-class image — is heard describing a hypothetical voter he calls “Billy Bob” from Red Cloud, Nebraska.
What the Recording Captures
“Billy Bob is f**king Red Cloud, Nebraska, who lives next to the f**king Trump store as you pull into town and is waving the Trump flag. All he knows is that he is on the winning team,” Osborn says on the recording.
He continues by arguing that this dynamic explains President Trump’s political effectiveness. “It really is that simple, it is. And Trump…That’s why he’s been so effective,” Osborn says. “He’s been so effective at taking Billy Bob and his wife, Mary Jane, or Mary Jo, and telling them, ‘Look, we’re winning. You’re on the winning team.'”
Then comes the line drawing the most attention: “And that’s all they care about, because their lives probably suck so f**king (much).”
Osborn’s Response to the Audio
Confronted about the recording, Osborn did not deny it was his voice. Asked to confirm whether he was the speaker, he replied, “It sure sounds like me.”
The Gateway Pundit reported that Osborn subsequently sought to walk back the remarks, though the outlet characterized that effort as insincere. The recording and the exchange with the reporter were both distributed by RNC Research, the party committee’s rapid-response operation.
Ricketts Responds
Ricketts, the Republican incumbent whom Osborn is challenging, responded to the audio in a post on X, framing it as evidence of how Osborn views the state’s rural communities.
“Dan Osborn was caught making derogatory comments about rural Nebraskans in another leaked audio,” Ricketts wrote. “Dan Osborn continues to show us who he really is. His comments show a clear lack of respect for the Nebraskans who make this state great.”
The senator added that he would “continue standing up and delivering for every Nebraskan in every part of this state.”
Background on the Race
Osborn, an industrial mechanic, Navy veteran, and former union leader, has leaned heavily on that biography in his campaigns. He ran for the Senate two years ago as well, losing to Republican Senator Deb Fischer by just over six points.
Democrats are not fielding a candidate in the Nebraska Senate race, effectively ceding the anti-Ricketts lane to Osborn — a setup that mirrors his previous run. The Gateway Pundit, which reported the audio, describes Osborn as a “blue-collar independent” promoted by Democrats in a key Senate race, and noted that he is currently running just behind Ricketts in the polls.
The recording’s release lands in the middle of a contest both parties are watching closely, and it puts Osborn’s central pitch — that he understands ordinary Nebraskans in a way establishment politicians do not — squarely in question. Ricketts and his allies have signaled they intend to keep the audio front and center as the campaign moves forward.
