Prosecutors in Ohio introduced more than 100,000 text messages Friday between former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn and the woman with whom he was having an affair, messages they say show him fantasizing about killing his wife before she was found shot to death in the family’s home, according to reporting from Breitbart and News Nation.
One of the messages, read in court, put it bluntly: “If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat,” Flynn allegedly wrote. “That is how dark and how hateful I feel. I choose you.”
The words land hard against the image Flynn cultivated in public — a singer who appeared on the 12th season of the long-running talent show in 2013 and whose studio performances, sometimes of religious songs, are still viewable on YouTube. Flynn never advanced to the live rounds; he made it through the Chicago auditions before being eliminated during “Hollywood Week,” which means the vast majority of viewers who knew his face at all knew it only in passing.
The state’s theory
Prosecutors contend Flynn killed his wife, Ashley Flynn, around 2:30 a.m. on February 16 and then placed a 911 call in the early morning hours in an attempt to dress the killing up as a break-in gone wrong. Police found Ashley Flynn dead with two gunshots to the back of her head, according to investigators, shot while her two daughters slept across the hall.
Those daughters, ages 10 and 12, are expected to testify against their father, News Nation reported.
The 911 call itself was played in open court during the trial, which is being televised by Court TV. On the recording, Flynn can be heard crying, telling the dispatcher someone had broken into his home. He said he was in his daughters’ bedroom when the shooting happened — because, he claimed, the girls were sick at the time.
But police dogs brought to the scene did not turn up any scent evidence pointing to an intruder, according to News Nation’s reporting.
The trial is being held in Troy, Ohio, roughly six miles from the couple’s home in Tipp City, a suburb of Dayton.
The defense’s likely argument
Flynn’s defense is expected to argue that the texts — however ugly — were not an admission of guilt. That framing matters because the physical evidence in the case is not what anyone would call airtight.
Crime analysts have described the prosecution’s case as something short of a slam dunk. Flynn had no gunshot residue on his hands or his clothing, and the murder weapon has never been found. Jurors are therefore being asked to weigh a mountain of digital communication and circumstantial detail against the absence of some of the forensic hallmarks that typically anchor a homicide prosecution.
The sheer volume of messages between Flynn and his mistress is likely to be the emotional center of the state’s presentation. Prosecutors spent Friday walking the court through message after message, building a portrait of a man whose private words, they say, revealed a motive long before a 911 call ever went out.
Flynn has been charged with killing his wife. The trial continues.
