Rep. Adam Smith Calls for Trump Impeachment: 'He's Not Listening to Anybody'

Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) said Saturday that President Donald Trump should be impeached and removed from office, arguing that the president is ignoring Congress, the courts, and any attempt at oversight as a war escalates under his watch.

Smith made the comments during an appearance on CNN’s “Newsroom,” where he told host Jessica Dean that waiting for the next presidential election is no longer a viable option. The remarks were flagged by Breitbart News.

“President Trump is not paying any attention to Congress. He’s not paying any attention to the courts. He’s doing what he wants to do,” Smith said. “I think the only way to end this war is to remove Donald Trump from office.”

The Washington Democrat described the president as detached from the reality of the conflict, saying Trump continues to characterize the war in glowing terms even as it intensifies. “I think he is so disconnected from reality right now that even as he sees this war going on, he’s talking about how great it’s going, how everything’s going wonderfully,” Smith said.

Smith Draws a Line: Impeachment, Not the Ballot Box

Dean pressed Smith to clarify whether he was calling for impeachment or simply urging voters to elect a Democrat in the next presidential election. Smith did not leave room for interpretation.

“No. I mean, I, at this point, I think it has to be impeachment,” he said. “I mean, he’s so out of control in so many different directions that we can’t wait two years.”

Smith questioned what the country’s position would look like if the war continued to spiral while waiting for the next election cycle. “You know, we wait two years, and then what? I mean, where are we at as this war continues to spin out of control?” he asked.

He faulted the president for lacking a plan to bring the conflict to a close and for disregarding the counsel of advisers. “You know, he has no exit strategy. He’s not listening to anybody,” Smith said.

The congressman also drew a contrast between the president’s focus and the stakes of the war, saying Trump is “more concerned with his ballroom than he is with what’s actually going on in this war.” He concluded that the situation offers few clean paths forward. “So, yeah, we’re in a very, very dangerous situation and there are no good options.”

A Familiar Demand, With a New Urgency

Smith’s call for impeachment is not the first time Democrats have sought to remove Trump from office, but his framing on Saturday was notable for its explicit rejection of the electoral route. Rather than urging voters to deliver a Democratic victory in the next presidential race, Smith argued that the timeline of the current conflict makes waiting impossible.

The comments also reflect a broader frustration among some lawmakers that the administration has sidelined congressional input and ignored judicial rulings as the war proceeds. Smith’s language — that Trump is “not paying any attention to Congress” or “the courts” — suggests a view that existing checks on executive power are not functioning as intended.

Whether Smith’s position gains traction among his colleagues remains unclear. Impeachment in the House would require a majority vote, followed by a two-thirds vote to convict in the Senate — a threshold that has proven difficult to reach in past efforts. But Smith’s remarks signal that at least some Democrats are willing to push the debate beyond oversight hearings and toward removal proceedings.

For now, the congressman’s message was blunt: the president’s handling of the war, in his view, has left the country with no good options — and only one remedy he considers adequate.
