Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) is committing another $1 million of his personal funds to his reelection campaign, signaling his determination to remain in the race despite mounting pressure from fellow Republicans and serious domestic abuse allegations.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Miller will loan his campaign the money in two $500,000 installments as he battles to keep his congressional seat amid growing controversy.
“I am in this for the long haul,” Miller said. “I know there are some people that are concerned about my ability to win this race right now, but I don’t share that.”
Moreno Leads Republican Calls for Resignation
The financial infusion comes as Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno has publicly urged Miller, his former son-in-law, to resign and withdraw from the race. Other Republican figures have subsequently joined Moreno’s call for Miller to step aside.
The controversy stems from court filings and police reports submitted by Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, who accused the congressman of physical abuse during their marriage. The allegations include claims that Miller threw hot water at her and pointed a gun at her head. Emily Moreno also alleged that their young daughter suffered a broken collarbone while in Miller’s care.
Miller has firmly denied all accusations, maintaining that no court or government agency has substantiated claims that he abused either his former wife or daughter.
Tight Deadline Looms
The congressman faces a critical Monday deadline set by Ohio election officials. If Miller withdraws before that cutoff, he can be replaced on the November ballot. After Monday, however, his name will remain on the ballot regardless of any decision to suspend his campaign.
The self-funding gives Miller a significant financial advantage over his Democratic opponent, Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker. Despite that edge, Miller faces an uphill battle according to recent polling data, which shows Poindexter leading by 14 points.
Trump’s Measured Response
President Donald Trump has not issued a public statement calling for Miller to end his campaign. However, according to reports, Trump warned Miller during a phone call this week that winning reelection would prove difficult given the circumstances.
Trump has also privately told advisers that he believes Miller should step aside from the race, though he has stopped short of making that position public.
The situation places Miller in an increasingly isolated position within his own party, as he attempts to overcome both political pressure from Republican colleagues and significant polling deficits heading into the final months before the November election.
The Ohio race is now drawing national attention as a test case of how domestic abuse allegations affect congressional races, particularly when a candidate refuses to withdraw despite pressure from party leadership and family members.
