Just months after his scandal-plagued campaign for U.S. Senate imploded, former Democratic nominee Graham Platner is scheduled to return to the public stage as the headline speaker at a Labor Day rally in Ellsworth, Maine.
The event, billed as a “Labor Day Rally for Labor,” is set for Sept. 7 at Ellsworth City Hall, according to reporting from Politico. It is being organized by two local activist groups—Hancock County Activists and Acadia Action Peacemakers—which have helped spearhead “No Kings” protests and other progressive demonstrations in the area. Platner is expected to discuss the history of unions and the role organized labor has played in American communities.
The rally marks one of Platner’s first public appearances since he suspended his campaign in July following accusations of sexual assault. The Hancock County Democratic Party has stressed that the event is not an official party function and is not affiliated with the Maine Democratic Party. However, the county party has shared information about the event on social media, with some posts mentioning Platner reportedly deleted while the event remained listed on its website.
A Rapid Rise and a Swift Fall
Platner’s political trajectory was nothing short of meteoric. After winning the Democratic nomination in June, he quickly attracted national attention and endorsements from prominent progressive figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA).
But his campaign unraveled after reports emerged that a former girlfriend accused him of sexually assaulting her in 2021. Platner denied the allegation, calling the accusations false. The claim followed months of other controversies, including sexually explicit messages sent to women, contentious social media posts, allegations of disturbing behavior from former girlfriends, and a tattoo featuring Nazi imagery.
Facing mounting pressure, Platner suspended his campaign in July. Maine Democrats subsequently selected former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson to replace him on the ballot.
Jackson Works to Move Forward
Jackson has sought to distance himself from the controversy while inheriting Platner’s coalition of supporters. He had previously endorsed Platner and appeared alongside him at campaign events, but after the sexual assault allegation surfaced, Jackson called on Platner to withdraw from the race.
Since leaving the campaign, Platner has largely stayed out of the public eye. His scheduled appearance at the Labor Day rally suggests that, despite his political collapse, he may not be finished playing a role in Maine politics or in the broader far-left movement.
