Shane Gillis Drops F-Bomb on Live SNL, Apologizes Twice Before Credits Roll

Shane Gillis swore on live television Saturday night while hosting Saturday Night Live, then apologized twice before the broadcast ended, according to The Daily Wire.

The 38-year-old comedian was performing in a Green Eggs and Ham parody when the slip happened. Gillis played a defensive son opposite Mikey Day as his father, with Andrew Dismukes appearing as Sam-I-Am, who spends the sketch relentlessly pushing the titular dish on the reluctant dad.

Gillis’s character stepped in to tell Sam-I-Am to back off. The line went sideways in the middle of it.

The slip, and a castmate’s quick save

“Hey, what the hell is wrong with you?” Gillis said during the sketch. “My dad said he doesn’t like green eggs and ham — drop it, walk away.”

Sam-I-Am answered that the father might like green eggs and ham anyway. Gillis’s response is where things went off script: he began telling Sam-I-Am that his dad had said he doesn’t like the dish, but the word “f—ing” came out along the way. He caught it immediately, exclaimed “Jeez!” and waved to the laughing studio audience.

Day folded the mistake into the scene rather than trying to move past it. “You said a bad word,” he told Gillis in character. He came back to it later as well, telling his on-screen son: “You’re a loser, and you said a bad word!”

As the sketch cut away, Gillis could be heard saying, “Sorry about earlier.” He apologized a second time during the closing goodbyes, when cast members and guests traditionally gather on stage to wave off the broadcast.

Why the timing matters to the FCC

Federal rules restrict indecent and profane broadcasts between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday’s episode started at 11:30 p.m. Eastern, which places the sketch outside that window. That specific timing is often the difference between a viral clip and a regulatory headache for a network.

NBC has not commented publicly on the moment, and there is no indication in the source reporting that any complaint or enforcement action has followed.

A third hosting turn, years after a brief hire

Saturday marked Gillis’s third time as host. His history with the show is unusual: SNL announced him as a cast member in 2019 and dropped him days later, before he ever appeared on air, after a podcast clip surfaced in which he used a racial slur against Chinese people. He returned to host for the first time in February 2024.

Outside of SNL, his Netflix series Tires was recently renewed for a fourth season.

What’s next for the show

SNL has no new episode for the next two weeks, per the source report. It returns on Halloween with Obsession‘s Inde Navarrette hosting and Gracie Abrams as the musical guest.

Live television’s long-running appeal for sketch comedy is the same thing that makes nights like Saturday risky: nothing is edited before it reaches viewers. In this case, the mistake became part of the bit — Day’s character scolding Gillis for the bad word got a bigger laugh than a clean version of the line likely would have.
