Spanish authorities arrested two individuals over the weekend who allegedly attempted to orchestrate violent riots in the Andalusian province of Málaga, successfully thwarting what could have been widespread Halloween night chaos across the country.
The arrests took place in Fuengirola on Saturday, with police detaining one adult and one minor just as they were reportedly preparing to launch violent riots targeting local businesses. According to information from the Spanish National Police cited by radio network Cadena SER, the suspects planned to loot and pillage commercial establishments throughout Halloween evening and night.
Both detainees now face multiple charges including conspiracy to commit public disturbances and conspiracy to commit property crimes.
Connection to French-Inspired Riot Group
Investigators believe the suspects are connected to Blocus—meaning “Blockade” in French—a group that recently issued numerous online threats calling for violent riots across Spain. The group’s activities were reportedly “inspired” by violent protests that swept through France during October.
The adult detainee allegedly operated Blocus Fuengirola, a messaging chat where would-be rioters received incitement to commit violent acts along with detailed instructions on how to carry out the attacks. Social media content attributed to Blocus had called for a violent nationwide wave of protests to coincide with Halloween.
Saturday’s arrests came just hours after police detained another individual on Friday, October 30, who authorities say was encouraging people to set fires in commercial districts of Fuengirola and Marbella during Halloween night.
Widespread Police Operation Across Spain
The threat of Halloween riots prompted Spanish law enforcement agencies to deploy additional security forces and intensify efforts to track down alleged organizers. According to Spanish outlets, seven individuals have been arrested in the region over recent days for their alleged involvement in Blocus’ planned riots, including separate calls for violent protests in Valencia and Bilbao alongside Fuengirola and Marbella.
The police response extended beyond Málaga. Increased law enforcement activity prevented riots from materializing in Madrid on Saturday, while also stopping new outbreaks of violence in Barcelona and Bilbao, among other cities.
Businesses across Spain’s major cities had taken precautions ahead of Halloween night, boarding up storefronts and implementing additional security measures in response to the threats.
Operation Deemed a Success
According to El Español, Blocus’ plans for Halloween riots largely failed, with “practically no riots” taking place on October 31. The outlet described the outcome as a “total failure” for the group.
Police efforts resulted in approximately 20 detentions across Spain and the identification of over 2,200 individuals linked to Blocus. The newspaper 20 Minutos similarly highlighted that increased police activity successfully prevented planned violence in multiple cities.
Spanish outlets reporting on Monday morning noted that no major violent incidents occurred in Spain over the weekend despite the numerous threats and calls for unrest issued in recent days.
Context of Recent Unrest
The Halloween threats followed recent violent protests and riots that took place in Barcelona and Bilbao, which had already put Spanish law enforcement on high alert. The escalating situation prompted the deployment of additional security resources nationwide.
While Spain successfully avoided widespread Halloween violence, other European nations weren’t as fortunate. Germany endured another weekend of violent riots, with government officials acknowledging that members of the “migrant community” and far-left groups were behind the violent protests there.
The arrests in Málaga represent part of Spain’s broader effort to crack down on organized violence and prevent the kind of sustained unrest that has affected other European countries in recent weeks. Authorities continue to monitor online activity and messaging groups for further threats of coordinated violence.
