A Texas high school football star has died after suffering a cardiac arrest during practice, according to officials.
Odin Hensley, 17, a standout athlete at Lake Travis High School in Austin, died late Wednesday, the Lake Travis Independent School District announced Thursday. He had been hospitalized in intensive care after collapsing on the field earlier in the week.
Emergency responders, including a Travis County Star Flight helicopter, were dispatched to the school on Tuesday following reports of a “seizure,” according to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services public information officer Shannon Koersterer, as reported by the American-Statesman.
Hensley was rushed to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, where he was admitted to the ICU, officials said.
A ‘Dedicated Two-Sport Athlete’
In a statement, Lake Travis ISD remembered Hensley as a devoted competitor who excelled in both football and wrestling.
“At Lake Travis High School, he was a dedicated two-sport athlete who excelled in wrestling and football,” the district said. “His teachers and coaches remember Odin as a kind, determined young man who was a valued teammate, classmate, and friend. His presence touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed.”
Hensley’s stepmother, Angel Ruiz, expressed the family’s shock. “It is still unbelievable,” she said Thursday.
Community Rallies
An estimated 350 people gathered Wednesday evening at Lake Hills Church for a vigil honoring the teen, according to the report.
A GoFundMe campaign set up to support the Hensley family has raised more than $172,000 toward a $250,000 goal, as of this writing.
The cause of the cardiac arrest has not been publicly disclosed. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young athlete whose life was cut short far too soon.
