The Burning Man art festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert closed under a somber cloud this year, with two attendees dying in separate incidents during the event’s final days.
Craigh Mann, 60, died Saturday after campmates discovered his body, according to officials. No cause of death has been released. Two days earlier, a man in his 50s died from what was described as an unspecified medical emergency.
Pershing County Sheriff Coroner Jerry Allen said there were no apparent signs of external foul play in Mann’s death, with the final cause still pending, as reported by Music Feeds.
The Burning Man Project, which organizes the festival, expressed condolences in a statement: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the participant’s family, friends, campmates, and all those affected by this loss.”
Organizers said they have made around-the-clock peer and crisis-support resources available to attendees affected by the deaths.
A Difficult Year in the Desert
The fatalities came amid a particularly challenging edition of the annual gathering, which typically draws more than 60,000 people to the remote playa. Extreme weather added to the strain, with heavy rainfall transforming the former lakebed into a muddy quagmire, according to social media posts shared during the event.
The rainfall was the latest weather setback for the festival, which has faced similar conditions in previous years. Attendees posted images and videos of the mud-covered ground, though the full extent of the disruption was still being assessed as the event wound down.
The deaths are not unprecedented for the festival, which, as noted by SF Gate, usually “sees one or two deaths each year” given the size and remoteness of Black Rock City.
Last year’s gathering also ended in tragedy when a 37-year-old Russian national died; that case continues to be investigated as a homicide and remains unsolved, according to SF Gate, which reported that new details had recently emerged.
The back-to-back deaths and the weather issues have cast a pall over what is often seen as a transformative and celebratory community event. Organizers have not yet released further information about the circumstances of either death or the identity of the second victim.
As the festival closed and attendees began the long exodus from the desert, many were left to process the losses and the difficult conditions that marked the 2026 event. The Burning Man Project’s support resources remain available to those affected, officials said.
