Undercover Audio: Blake Gendebien Backs Unrestricted Abortion, Gun Limits in NY-21

The Daily Wire reports secretly recorded audio shows the dairy farmer and Democratic candidate taking positions on abortion, guns, and vaccine mandates that go beyond the moderate image he's built in a Trump-friendly district.

Undercover Audio: Blake Gendebien Backs Unrestricted Abortion, Gun Limits in NY-21

Newly obtained undercover audio published by The Daily Wire captures Democratic congressional candidate Blake Gendebien staking out far more explicit positions on abortion, firearms, and vaccination mandates than the moderate, rural-independent brand he has cultivated in one of New York’s most Republican districts.

Gendebien, a second-generation dairy farmer, is running against Republican Anthony Constantino in New York’s 21st Congressional District — a sprawling, 15-county expanse covering more than 16,000 square miles across the North Country and currently represented by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY). President Donald Trump carried the district by roughly 21 points in 2024, according to Punchbowl News, and Stefanik won her own reelection bid with nearly 62 percent of the vote.

Despite those numbers, Gendebien has drawn national Democratic interest as the party searches for candidates who can compete in traditionally Republican territory. He has leaned heavily on his farming background and a promise to work across party lines — a pitch that the recordings, as characterized by The Daily Wire, complicate.

No limits on abortion, he told a September audience

Speaking at a September 3 event before an audience of healthcare workers, Gendebien was asked directly whether he supported any restrictions on abortion and, if so, what limits he would impose.

According to the audio, he answered by saying he fully stands with women, framing reproductive care decisions as matters between a patient, her physician and her family, and calling for a return to the precedent set by Roe v. Wade. When pressed again on whether he would identify any specific restrictions, he did not name one.

Elsewhere in the same event, Gendebien spoke warmly about Planned Parenthood while discussing his mother’s history with the organization, saying she taught reproductive classes at its former office in Ogdensburg, New York.

Gun measures and vaccine mandates

The audio also captures Gendebien voicing support for a pair of gun-control measures that have long divided Congress. He said universal background checks and safe firearm storage laws are necessary, adding that “we’ve got to take those things seriously.”

On vaccines, Gendebien told the September 3 audience that he is focused on preserving vaccination mandates, calling the idea of losing them crazy and tying the issue to healthy communities and healthy kids. The Daily Wire reported that he framed his position as a refusal to “go back in time.”

Asked about the recordings, Gendebien’s campaign manager, Michael Waller, did not address the specific policy points. Instead, he described Gendebien as a lifelong district resident who has farmed, coached, served on the school board and represented farmers for a decade — and said voters already know where he stands, which is why he has earned backing from Republicans, independents and Democrats alike.

A moderate brand under strain

The recorded comments land in the middle of a race where Gendebien’s central selling point has been fit rather than ideology. He has argued that the economic pressures facing the North Country — energy costs, trade with Canada, rural healthcare — cut across party lines, and he has publicly put distance between himself and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America, according to the Times Union.

That balancing act has not always gone smoothly. In August, his campaign aired a 30-second television spot in the Albany market promising voters he would “stand up to Kathy Hochul or work with Donald Trump, anything to do what’s right for upstate.” The ad ran for roughly 10 days, according to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact.

Citing two people familiar with the situation, Politico’s New York Playbook reported that Gendebien was subsequently told the ad needed to come down and that he would be suspended from the New York Democratic Party’s statewide coordinated campaign while it remained on the air. Gendebien’s campaign disputed that account, saying the spot had simply reached the end of its scheduled run.

He appeared at the opening of a Democratic coordinated-campaign office shortly afterward, and state Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs said the party remained committed to supporting his bid. National Democrats have also invested attention in the race: Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has campaigned alongside Gendebien, and the Blue Dog PAC has endorsed him.

Republicans have pointed to the friction as evidence that Gendebien’s moderate presentation is chiefly a campaign tactic. The National Republican Congressional Committee has taken to describing him as “Partisan Democrat Blake Gendebien,” and Constantino’s campaign has worked to tie him to the national party apparatus.

Whether the recordings move voters in a district Trump won comfortably is an open question. Gendebien’s supporters argue his local roots and agricultural background give him a credibility that national party labels cannot erase. His critics now have audio they say shows the label fits after all.
