LAS VEGAS — Vice President JD Vance delivered a sharp rebuke of Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed during an off-the-record conversation with the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) on Monday night, according to a recording obtained by The Daily Wire.
Speaking with RJC National Chairman Norm Coleman at the group’s National Leadership Summit, Vance called El-Sayed “one of the worst disgraces running in the history of the American political process,” citing the candidate’s response to a foiled antisemitic terror plot and his association with progressive commentator Hasan Piker.
Vance on Michigan Race and Antisemitism
The conversation was closed to the press and conducted under a “friends” rule discouraging recording, but The Daily Wire secured a full audio file. Vance used the platform to elevate Republican Senate hopeful Mike Rogers as “maybe the single most important candidate right now in this midterm election.”
Vance recounted meeting the rabbi and security guards who stopped an attempted attack on a Michigan synagogue, describing it as “one of the worst attempted antisemitic terrorist attacks that we’ve ever seen.” He then turned his fire on El-Sayed, who drew criticism for saying “hurt people do hurt things” in the aftermath and for declining to explicitly condemn the attack.
“When your response to that is to empathize with the person who’s going to commit this heinous act of violence, and not with the kids who almost lost their lives… the response to that is you’re a disgraceful human being,” Vance said.
Vance also attacked El-Sayed’s ties to Piker, who has said America deserved 9/11, and accused El-Sayed of promoting a worldview that categorizes people by ethnicity. “This is a guy who looks at you and says, ‘You’re a good person if you belong to this ethnicity, and you’re a bad person if you belong to that ethnicity,'” Vance added.
Vance on Israel, US Interests
Coleman pressed Vance on past remarks suggesting that U.S. and Israeli interests sometimes diverge, noting that critics could seize on the phrasing. Vance sought to clarify his stance, calling Israel “one of our most important alliances in the world and certainly our most important regional alliance.”
Vance referenced cooperation on intelligence and technology sharing, and echoed President Trump’s framing that Israel has been a “great partner” even when disagreements arise. “I wouldn’t say that it’s purely transactional,” he said, before the recording portion obtained by The Daily Wire cuts off.
The RJC event came as Vance campaigns for Republican candidates ahead of the midterms, with Michigan shaping up as a key battleground. Polls suggest a competitive race between Rogers and El-Sayed, and conservative groups have poured resources into the state.
Neither the El-Sayed campaign nor the RJC immediately responded to requests for comment on the recording.
