When Stephanie Brown pulled out her phone to record her 15-year-old daughter’s wrestling match, she expected another routine bout. Kallie Keeler, a sophomore who had been wrestling since age four, had earned the number two spot on her high school team. Her three older brothers had all wrestled before her, and she was following their path.
But this match was different.
According to Brown, she immediately noticed visible distress on her daughter’s face. As the opponent pinned Kallie down, she shouted out in pain. When she got up from the mat, she was crying. What happened during that match, Brown says, was not just a wrestling move — it was a sexual assault.
The opponent, who had been permitted to compete in the girls’ division because he identifies as female, allegedly grabbed Kallie in a way that went far beyond the bounds of the sport. Brown, who recorded the incident on her phone, says the video shows the male wrestler fondling her daughter while she was helpless on the mat.

A Pattern of Ignored Complaints
This was not an isolated incident. Brown says she had complained to school and district officials about the same wrestler before, only to be dismissed. The athlete, she claims, had a history of targeting girls in the league, but nothing was done.
“They kept saying, ‘We can’t do anything about it because of state policy,’” Brown told The Daily Wire. “I heard that over and over. They knew who he was. They knew what he had done. But they wouldn’t protect these girls.”
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has a policy that allows students to participate in sports consistent with their gender identity, with no requirement for hormone therapy or surgical transition. That policy, which is echoed in state law, leaves local schools with little room to deny participation.
Brown says she was told that even if she filed a formal complaint, the wrestler would still be allowed to compete — because the state’s nondiscrimination rules trump any safety concerns a school might raise.

“The Price of Political Cowardice”
The incident has reignited a national debate over transgender participation in school sports, particularly in contact sports like wrestling. Critics argue that the focus on gender ideology is being prioritized over the physical safety and emotional well-being of female athletes.
“The price of political cowardice is a girl’s sexual assault,” Brown said. “They knew this was happening. They had a duty to step in, and they chose to look the other way.”
She expressed frustration that her daughter, who had dreamed of wrestling in college, may now walk away from the sport she loves. “How do you tell a 15-year-old to go back out there after something like that?” she asked.
Brown has filed a police report and is considering a lawsuit against the school district, alleging negligence and failure to protect her daughter from a known threat.

State Officials Stand Firm
Washington state officials have not apologized or announced any policy review. Instead, they have reiterated their commitment to inclusive policies, saying that transgender students have the same right to participate in sports as any other student.
Advocates for those policies say that excluding transgender athletes would be discriminatory and harmful. They point out that not all transgender athletes have an unfair advantage, and that blanket bans are the wrong approach.
But Brown and other parents of female athletes push back, saying the discussion often forgets the girls who are being harmed right now.
“My daughter is a real person,” Brown said. “She has a face, a name, a future. And the people who are supposed to protect her are more worried about being called transphobic than keeping her safe.”
The wrestling match was videotaped. Brown says the footage makes it clear what happened. “There’s no mistaking it,” she said. “This was not a wrestling move. This was sexual assault, and it was caught on camera.”
The police investigation is ongoing. The school district has not commented, citing the open investigation. The WIAA has also remained silent.
For Brown, the fight is just beginning. She is speaking out, she says, so that no other daughter has to go through what Kallie went through.
