Prosecutors say Joshua Kerry, accused of murdering Ann Widdecombe, also tried to break into Nigel Farage's house and collected information on over 100 British political figures.

A 28-year-old man accused of murdering former government minister Ann Widdecombe also attempted to break into the home of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, a court heard Wednesday, according to reporting by the Times of London.

Joshua Kerry appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to begin his trial on charges of preparing acts of terrorism against Farage between May 2024 and July of this year. Prosecutor Kashif Malik told the court that Farage’s girlfriend, Laure Ferrari, returned to their home on April 20 of last year to find part of the doorframe hanging loose and a tool mark suggesting an attempt had been made to force entry.

A bottle of lighter fluid was found near the door, the Times reported. Prosecutors also alleged that data from Kerry’s car showed the vehicle traveling from his home in Rotherham to Farage’s street on the same day, where it remained for several hours before returning home.

Kerry, a Yorkshireman, is accused of gathering information on more than 100 prominent political figures in Britain, a list that includes Farage.

Separate murder charge

The terrorism case runs alongside a separate murder trial over the death of Ann Widdecombe, who was beaten to death at the age of 78 at her countryside home in Devon in July. Kerry is accused of driving roughly 270 miles from Rotherham to Devon to kill the former Conservative MP and Reform UK spokeswoman with a hammer.

The two cases together have drawn fresh attention to the security arrangements protecting Farage and other British political figures. Earlier this year, Farage faced accusations of impropriety over a £5 million gift he received in 2024 from billionaire donor Christopher Harborne, funds that were used to pay for a private security detail.

At the time of the donation, Farage was not a Member of Parliament. He had announced his intention to retire from public life after the campaign to leave the European Union succeeded in its aim. Opponents in both the Conservative and Labour parties argued that his failure to report the gift amounted to a breach of parliamentary ethics rules.

Farage resigned from Parliament in order to run in a special by-election, putting the question to voters in Clacton. He was returned to the House of Commons in August with more than 63 percent of the vote.

The proceedings at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday focused on the terrorism preparation charge, with the prosecution outlining the evidence it says ties Kerry to an apparent attempt to enter Farage’s property. The case is expected to continue as the separate murder prosecution proceeds.
