A woman who allegedly stabbed two people in Times Square on Sunday afternoon was shot and killed by New York Police Department officers, according to reports. The incident occurred in the heart of Manhattan’s busy tourist district, which is designated a gun-free zone under state law.
The attack unfolded at 4:26 p.m. when the woman, whose identity has not been released, allegedly stabbed a man and a woman, according to ABC 7. The female victim later succumbed to her wounds. The male victim’s condition has not been reported.
After the stabbings, the alleged assailant fled north toward the NYPD substation in Times Square, where she was confronted by police and fatally shot. The entire sequence, from the initial attack to the officer-involved shooting, took roughly one minute, according to reports.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the stabbings as a random and unprovoked attack,
according to CNN. The motive remains under investigation.
Gun-Free Zone Designation
The shooting has drawn renewed attention to the fact that Times Square is a designated gun-free zone under New York’s concealed carry laws. The designation was part of the state’s response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which struck down the state’s restrictive concealed carry permitting scheme.
In August 2022, NBC New York reported that the new concealed carry law was taking effect, meaning Times Square will be a gun-free zone by local law.
The law was challenged in court, but the Associated Press reported that the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the gun-free status of Times Square and other sensitive
locations. This means even concealed carry license holders are barred from being armed for self-defense while in Times Square.
The latest incident has revived debates about whether gun-free zones make areas more vulnerable to attacks. Proponents of gun rights argue that such designations leave law-abiding citizens defenseless, while supporters of gun control maintain that restricting firearms in crowded public spaces reduces the risk of gun violence.
Ongoing Debate
Times Square is one of the most heavily policed areas in New York City, with a permanent NYPD substation on site and a visible law enforcement presence. Despite that, Sunday’s attack unfolded in a matter of seconds, raising questions about the practical impact of gun-free zone laws in areas where police are already highly visible.
The NYPD has not yet released additional details about the officer-involved shooting, including how many officers fired their weapons or whether body cameras captured the encounter. The department’s force investigation division is expected to review the incident.
