Roughly 45,000 people took part in rallies across about 100 German cities in a nationwide student-led strike against the possible reintroduction of compulsory military service, according to organizers cited by The Gateway Pundit.
The demonstrations, coordinated under the banner “School Strike Against Compulsory Military Service,” drew schoolchildren, students and teachers who say Berlin is moving steadily toward a new draft despite the government’s public framing of its plans as voluntary.
Organizers Say Government Is ‘Serious’ About Conscription
Bela Breitner, one of the strike’s organizers, told reporters that the federal government was “serious about gradually reintroducing compulsory military service” โ a claim the coalition has not confirmed in those terms.
At a protest in Hamburg, demonstrators waved flags and carried banners reading “We won’t take part in your wars,” according to the outlet. Social media posts from the day showed crowds holding signs with slogans including “Merz, we’ve had enough,” “Your wars โ without us,” and “Students against military service,” alongside banners declaring “Russia is not the enemy.”
A Russian-language account, RUSSNiUS, shared video of the rallies on September 25, 2026, stating that organizers put participation at more than 45,000 people. The crowd figure is an organizer estimate and has not been independently verified.
Voluntary Service Law Already in Force
The protest wave follows the entry into force in January of a law creating a voluntary military service track aimed at recruiting enough volunteers to grow the Bundeswehr. Under that framework, if the security situation deteriorates or volunteer numbers fall short, the Bundestag could consider some form of compulsory service โ a possibility that has animated the student movement.

Compounding the anger is a questionnaire that men of military age are required to complete about their health. The form is mandatory for men and voluntary for women, and all 18-year-old men are to undergo a medical exam assessing their fitness for possible service. In some towns, young men have reportedly received invitations for military medical exams regardless of whether they have expressed any interest in serving.
“The responses to the questionnaires show that young people do not want to join the Bundeswehr,” said Elias Bernhard, a 16-year-old protester from Hamburg, referring to Germany’s armed forces.
Merz’s Rearmament Push Draws Unpopularity
The strikes land at an awkward moment for Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose government has made strengthening the military one of its central priorities. Polling cited in the coverage shows 78% of voters want Merz out of office, and the conscription debate appears to be feeding that discontent rather than easing it.
The unrest also comes amid a broader European rearmament drive that has accelerated since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Germany has positioned itself at the front of that effort, unveiling a strategy to turn the Bundeswehr into what officials describe as Europe’s strongest military and approving a major package of attack drones with an initial purchase worth half a billion euros.
Berlin has also tightened rules around military-age men leaving the country, requiring them to seek army permission for absences longer than three months โ a measure that critics say points toward a de facto mobilization framework.
A Generation Saying No
The scale of the student walkout suggests the conscription question could become a durable domestic flashpoint. Organizers say the strike is not a one-off protest but part of a sustained campaign, and the participation of teachers alongside pupils indicates the opposition reaches beyond the schoolyard.
For now, no formal decision on reinstating the draft has been made; any move in that direction would require action by the Bundestag. But the message from the streets โ that a generation raised on the promise of a post-conscription Germany is not prepared to sign up for the next one โ is being delivered in numbers large enough to register in Berlin.
