A high school football game in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, came to a sudden halt Friday night after a gunshot rang out during the fourth quarter, according to the New York Post.
The game, played between South Allegheny and Elizabeth Forward high schools, was stopped when the shot was fired, the Post reported. The alleged shooter, identified as a 17-year-old student at Brashear High School, was arrested at the scene.
Police recovered a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun, which was reportedly stolen, according to WTAE. No injuries were reported in the incident.
The teenager now faces a range of charges, including juvenile delinquency allegations along with receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a weapon on school property, and recklessly endangering another person. Additional charges remain possible, the Post noted.
South Allegheny Superintendent Dr. David McDonald issued a statement responding to the incident, emphasizing the district’s commitment to safety.
“We are grateful for the quick response of our South Allegheny School Police officers and the assistance of our local law enforcement partners,” McDonald said. “The safety of our students, athletes, families, staff and community remains our highest priority.”
The shooting comes as schools and communities nationwide continue to grapple with gun violence, particularly at public events. McKeesport police have not yet released additional details about the investigation, including how the student brought the weapon onto school property.
The football game was halted with time still on the clock, and it is unclear whether the game will be rescheduled or declared complete. School officials have not yet commented on the game’s status.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges schools face in securing sporting events, which often draw large crowds and require coordination between school police and local law enforcement.
Authorities have not disclosed the student’s name, and it is unclear whether he will be tried as a juvenile or as an adult. The investigation is ongoing.
