At least five people were killed and several others injured when an Amazon cargo jet crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday, according to officials and early reports.
The crash occurred after the aircraft, identified as Air Flight 7598, overshot the runway while landing at approximately 2 p.m. ET, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. The plane, a Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft, had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Miami Fire Rescue chief Raied Jadallah described the scene as a “very complex situation,” telling the Wall Street Journal that “the plane swiped several vehicles and trapped people inside who had to be extricated.”
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those killed or injured, and it remains unclear whether any of the victims were on the ground or aboard the aircraft. A source with knowledge of the incident told NBC6 that the two pilots were taken to Jackson South and the three others were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Cause Under Investigation
The FAA has said it will investigate the cause of the crash, though no official determination has been made public so far. The incident comes more than six years after an Amazon Air jet crashed into Trinity Bay marshland in February 2019, killing three people on board. The FAA at that time attributed the crash to pilot error, according to the New York Times.
Sunday’s crash adds to a string of recent aviation incidents that have drawn renewed scrutiny to air cargo operations and runway safety at major airports. Miami International Airport is among the busiest in the United States for both passenger and cargo traffic, and the crash forced temporary disruptions to airport operations, though details on flight delays or cancellations were not immediately available.
The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to join the FAA in the investigation, and officials have urged the public to avoid the area as crews work to secure the scene and begin their probe.
