South Carolina Officer Christopher Delong Killed in Line of Duty

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A 29-year-old police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Saturday morning while responding to a domestic incident, according to reports from local news outlets.

Officer Christopher Delong of the Columbia Police Department was fatally wounded in an exchange of gunfire with 33-year-old Adam Dowdy, who was also killed in the shootout.

Response to a Domestic Call

WISTV reported that Delong arrived on the scene at approximately 9:43 a.m. after officers were dispatched to a call involving Dowdy. A woman at the scene told officers she already had a restraining order against Dowdy, though other details of the incident remain scant.

Officers spotted Dowdy and engaged him, and it was during that engagement that Delong suffered the fatal gunshot wound.

Two Years on the Force

WACH noted that Delong had been with the Columbia Police Department for two years. He is survived by his wife and two young children.

Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford released a statement on Delong’s death, saying, in part: “We must remember the bravery and dedication of those who serve to protect us. The officer who was killed was not just a member of our law enforcement community; he was a husband, father, friend, and a devoted servant to our community. Officer Christopher Delong’s death exemplifies the danger that our officers face every day, putting their lives on the line to ensure our safety.”

The Columbia Police Department has not yet released additional details about the incident, but the loss of one of their own has already drawn an outpouring of support from the community and law enforcement agencies across the state.

As the investigation continues, authorities are piecing together the events that led to the deadly confrontation. The woman’s restraining order against Dowdy is expected to be a key part of the inquiry, though officials have not confirmed how the suspect gained access to a firearm or what precipitated the shooting.
