GOP Rep. Greg Steube Demands Leadership Resign After Midterm 'Bloodbath': Calls Them 'Embarrassingly Weak'

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) launched a blistering attack on Republican leadership following their disastrous midterm performance, which saw Democrats regain control of both the House and Senate. In a scathing social media post, Steube accused party leaders of being “embarrassingly weak” and demanded their resignation to make way for a bold conservative revival.

A Midterm Reckoning

The GOP faced crushing defeats in key Senate races across Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, and other battleground states, with Democrats potentially securing a 54-seat upper chamber majority. While results remained pending in Mississippi and Alaska Wednesday, the damage was already undeniable.

Steube didn’t mince words in his critique: “No, the polls were not wrong. You were. Even with record amounts of money at your disposal, you managed to get absolutely annihilated,” he wrote, lambasting leadership for governing “out of fear” rather than conservative principles.

The Blame Game

Multiple factors are being blamed for the Republican collapse, with inflation, the economy, and foreign policy clashes emerging as key issues. Vice President JD Vance echoed Steube’s frustrations in his own election post-mortem, citing internal polling that showed defecting Trump voters prioritized ending overseas conflicts, lowering costs, and America First policies.

“The reason we lost is the war,” Vance bluntly stated, noting President Trump’s own acknowledgment of its impact. A GOP insider’s polling allegedly showed discontented Republicans citing foreign policy and economic concerns as their motivation for crossing party lines.

Leadership Exodus Begins

House Minority Leader Mike Johnson (R-LA) became the first high-profile casualty, signaling he won’t seek the minority leader position post-election. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) reportedly intends to stay in the fight for minority leadership.

Steube closed his broadside with a pointed demand: “Please do us all a favor and step aside so new leadership can take a truly conservative direction, with the courage to do the things we were elected to do.” His message concluded with a callback to Trump’s famous sign-off—”Thank you for your attention to this matter”—underscoring the former president’s looming influence over the party’s future direction.
