In a stunning political upset, Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC), the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), lost his reelection bid in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District to Democratic challenger Richard N. Ojeda II.
Ojeda, a retired Army veteran, secured 51.1% of the vote compared to Hudson’s 48.9%, flipping a seat Republicans had held since 1963. The Associated Press called the race late Tuesday night.
A Symbolic Defeat for GOP
The loss carries particular significance as Hudson led the NRCC, the organization responsible for maintaining and expanding Republican control of the House. His defeat in what was considered safe Republican territory signals potential trouble for the party’s electoral strategy.
“WE JUST UNSEATED THE CHAIR OF THE NRCC,” Ojeda declared in a triumphant post on X. “IT’S A NEW DAY IN AMERICA.”
Hudson Concedes Gracefully
In a statement reported by Politico, Hudson acknowledged the voters’ decision: “Last night, the voters of North Carolina’s 9th District made their choice, and I respect it. God is sovereign over my life, and He has a plan for all of us.”
The outgoing congressman vowed to continue fighting for conservative principles, saying, “Whatever the future holds, I will keep fighting for those principles and for the people who believe in commonsense, conservative policies.”
Ojeda’s Military Background
Ojeda’s campaign emphasized his 24 years of military service, including deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Haiti. After retiring from the Army, he taught JROTC at a West Virginia high school before moving to North Carolina to care for aging parents.
The upset victory marks a significant shift in North Carolina politics and raises questions about the NRCC’s strategy heading into future election cycles.
