Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) on Wednesday voiced concern over the growing churn in Pentagon leadership, saying the military needs stability and calling on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to publicly explain the recent string of dismissals.
Appearing on MSNBC’s “State of Play” — the source transcript refers to the show as MS NOW’s “State of Play” — Lawler was asked whether he shares the concerns of fellow Republicans such as House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL) and Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), who have criticized the pace of firings at the top of the Defense Department.
‘You Need Stability’
“Yes, I think, obviously, especially when we are in the middle of a conflict in the Middle East, you need stability,” Lawler said. “There’s no question there [are] going to be disagreements at time between the upper leadership of the Pentagon. I think that’s not only normal, but healthy, but there needs to be stability.”
Lawler’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between Hegseth and former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, whose departure has sparked alarm among some Republicans. Bacon previously said Driscoll’s exit “reflects a view that many of us have, that the secretary has gone overboard on the firings.”
While Lawler acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable, he stressed that they should not come at the cost of institutional consistency.
“I think they need to, very quickly, install the new leadership in these positions,” Lawler said. “But, moreover, I think it’s critical, frankly, that Pete Hegseth come forth and talk about exactly why these changes have been made and what they are doing to ensure stability at the Pentagon.”
The New York Republican also said President Donald Trump should weigh in on the matter, adding that he wants to know the specifics of what drove the disagreement between Driscoll and Hegseth.
GOP Divisions Over Pentagon Firings
Lawler is the latest Republican to publicly question the administration’s approach to military leadership. Rogers has said he is “tired of all the churn” and wants to see stability in the ranks, while Bacon has been more direct in criticizing Hegseth’s handling of dismissals.
The debate highlights an emerging rift within the GOP over how aggressively to reshape the military’s senior ranks. Supporters of the changes argue that the administration is moving to remove officials who are not aligned with its policy direction, while critics worry that the constant turnover is undermining morale and operational readiness.
Lawler’s call for transparency suggests that even some Republicans who are generally supportive of the administration are uneasy with the lack of public explanation for the moves.
‘Healthy’ Disagreement vs. ‘Churn’
Lawler sought to draw a line between normal friction among senior leaders and the kind of instability that can weaken the military’s effectiveness.

His comments suggest that while he does not oppose policy differences, he believes the current situation has crossed a threshold that demands a response from the top.
The question now is whether Hegseth or Trump will address the concerns publicly. Lawler’s remarks indicate that at least some in Congress are not willing to let the matter rest without an explanation.
