Trans Rights Protesters Target London Harry Potter Store Over J.K. Rowling Controversy

Demonstrators rallied outside the flagship Harry Potter shop in London, urging fans to boycott the store due to the author's stance on gender issues.

Trans Rights Protesters Target London Harry Potter Store Over J.K. Rowling Controversy

Transgender rights activists staged a protest outside the newly opened Harry Potter store in London on Wednesday, clashing with the franchise’s continued popularity despite ongoing backlash against author J.K. Rowling over her views on biological sex.

Video footage circulating online showed demonstrators chanting slogans like “Trans rights! Gay rights! One struggle! One fight!” while holding signs reading “Protect Trans Lives” and “Stop Funding Trans Erasure.” The group, wielding megaphones, called on fans to avoid the Oxford Street store, citing Rowling’s public statements on gender identity.

Rowling Remains Flashpoint in Gender Debates

The protest comes amid years of controversy surrounding the bestselling author, who has faced intense criticism from transgender activists for defending single-sex spaces and questioning aspects of gender self-identification policies. Rowling has maintained her position despite what she describes as “an avalanche of death, rape, and torture threats.”

“Considering the impact that J.K. Rowling has on trans rights, it would be a disappointment if trans people weren’t here to have their voices heard,” one protester told Variety. Another claimed Rowling wields outsized influence, stating, “People don’t realize that, so that’s why we’re here today.”

Store Opens Amid Controversy

The 21,000-square-foot retail space—the UK’s largest official Harry Potter store—opened to long lines that wrapped around the block, with most visitors ignoring the demonstration. A store spokesperson told Variety they support “everyone’s right to the peaceful expression of personal viewpoints” while looking forward to “a day full of magic.”

Rowling, who recently established the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund to support legal cases involving sex-based rights, has become a polarizing figure in the culture wars. Last month, filmmaker Lilly Wachowski (The Matrix) escalated rhetoric by calling Rowling a “literal Nazi” and accusing Potter fans of supporting “trans genocide.”

The London protest highlights how Rowling’s works remain both commercially successful and politically contentious, with activists targeting the Wizarding World brand as a proxy for broader debates about gender identity and free speech.
