Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw and Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin erupted into a fiery exchange on CNN Wednesday, trading barbs over former President Donald Trump, insider trading, and the GOP’s midterm election losses.
The tense back-and-forth unfolded during CNN’s “Election Day in America” coverage, with the two lawmakers repeatedly interrupting each other as the debate grew increasingly personal.
“You Guys Lost the Election”
The clash began when Crenshaw suggested Republicans might work with Trump on legislation banning insider trading in the executive branch after the midterms. Raskin immediately scoffed at the idea, asking sarcastically, “Donald Trump wants to stop insider trading in the Executive Branch?”
When Crenshaw insisted Trump would support such a measure, Raskin shot back: “Let’s mark that down. Because their whole administration is about insider trading.” The Maryland Democrat then connected the argument to the GOP’s disappointing midterm performance, declaring, “You guys lost the election because you missed the point.”
Personal Jabs and Raised Voices
The exchange grew more heated as Crenshaw accused Raskin of relying on talking points rather than policy discussion. “Are you capable of doing anything but talking just in talking points?” the Texas Republican demanded. “Do you actually have facts? I’m doing actual policy discussions. You’re just yelling. Are you confused?”
Raskin fired back with a dig about Crenshaw’s home state: “Get your last few words in before you go back to Texas.” He also doubled down on accusations of GOP obstruction, claiming Republicans “just wanted to support Donald Trump’s corruption” rather than pass meaningful legislation.
Anchor Praises Substance Behind the Heat
Despite the combative tone, CNN anchor Dana Bash offered a positive spin on the confrontation. “As heated as this has gotten,” Bash remarked, “it is actually nice to hear the debate of issues and ideas, because we don’t hear that enough.”
The tense exchange highlighted the lingering divisions in Washington following the midterms, with Democrats emboldened by their stronger-than-expected performance and Republicans grappling with internal debates about their party’s future direction.
