The Democratic nominee for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, William Lawrence, reportedly deleted hundreds of social media posts in which he expressed support for abolishing prisons, dismantling traditional family structures, and overhauling the U.S. Constitution, according to a CNN report published Friday.
CNN said the deleted posts date from Lawrence’s time as a progressive organizer and included calls to “Abolish the Senate,” a profanity-laced critique of the nuclear family as an “isolating, individualistic, violent way of organizing society,” and a vision of “a world of free and open migration.” In one post, Lawrence wrote lyrics for a song inspired by moderate Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s resistance to climate legislation: “Our generation says f**k you for everything. Hurry up and die so that we can get started,” the lyrics read, per CNN.
Lawrence, who won the Democratic primary in August, is now running against incumbent Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in a seat that voted for Donald Trump in 2024 and is considered a key toss-up in the fight for House control.
Lawrence’s Response
According to CNN senior politics reporter Andrew Kaczynski, Lawrence has said he disagrees with some of the old posts. However, the report suggests Lawrence’s statement may be an attempt to clean up his record before the general election rather than a genuine repudiation of his earlier views.
Arrest and Activist Background
The report also highlights Lawrence’s past as a progressive activist. Fox News reported that Lawrence was arrested in 2013 for resisting police officers while protesting the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline. He and others chained themselves to machinery in protest, and his conviction was later expunged, according to Fox News.
Breitbart News previously detailed Lawrence’s role as a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, a climate activist organization backed by George Soros that describes its mission as “fighting fascism to win a Green New Deal.” In a 2023 interview, Lawrence called for “reconstructing” America through racial and economic justice.
Barrett, a former Army helicopter pilot, is seeking reelection in the district. In Congress, he has touted tax cuts for families and expanded benefits for Michigan veterans, according to Breitbart News.
