Seattle Interim Chief Says ‘Trigger-Pullers’ Instead of ‘Shooters,’ Drawing Fire

Seattle Interim Police Chief Andre Sayles faced backlash Monday after referring to violent criminals as “trigger-pullers” instead of “shooters,” according to a report from the Daily Wire.

During a public statement, Sayles discussed efforts to combat gun violence in the city, saying: “Looking at ways to where we can identify individuals that are known — we call them trigger pullers in our community.” He went on to describe a strategy of “identifying them, making sure that we’re putting cases on those individuals, working with King County Prosecutor’s Office to bring these individuals to justice because the families that lost loved ones throughout this year and years past deserve justice in this manner.”

The terminology stood out to critics who see it as part of a broader pattern under Mayor Katie Wilson, an activist who once advocated for fully disbanding the Seattle Police Department and building a city “entirely without SPD,” per the Daily Wire.

Sanitized Words vs. Soaring Violence

The mayor’s administration has come under fire for what critics describe as a focus on language and ideology rather than supporting law enforcement. The criticism arrives as Seattle reels from a wave of bloodshed, including a July mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival that killed two bystanders and wounded four others, including a toddler.

Sayles’ own appointment to the top police job came after Wilson ousted former Chief Shon Barnes, a move that some have interpreted as a signal of her priorities. Officers on the ground, meanwhile, are stretched thin, with the department down hundreds of positions compared to normal staffing levels.

Police Union Points to Broken Priorities

Seattle Police Officers Guild President Kent Loux has been a persistent and vocal critic of the mayor. Earlier this year, the union found itself in a standoff with City Hall after posting footage of a bloody triple shooting outside a nightclub. The mayor’s office attempted to force the union to delete the post, alleging that officers had leaked sensitive footage. The union responded with a cease-and-desist order, and the administration backed down in what Loux described as an embarrassing retreat.

Loux has argued that Wilson’s understanding of public safety is fundamentally at odds with that of rank-and-file officers. In his telling, the mayor’s version of public safety revolves around “bus lanes” and activist payouts, while officers know the job requires “boots on the ground.”

Police Incentives Cut While Activist Programs Funded

Budget decisions have added fuel to the fire. The city eliminated $50,000 signing bonuses that had been offered to experienced officers, a move that weakens the department’s ability to attract veteran cops already in short supply. The cuts came as the city faced a projected budget deficit.

At the same time, Wilson’s administration funneled more than $800,000 in taxpayer money toward LGBT and transgender “community stabilization” initiatives, according to the Daily Wire. That spending priority has drawn sharp contrasts between the city’s stated commitments and its approach to public safety.

Surveillance Technology Left Dark

The mayor has also ordered high-tech surveillance cameras near the Stadium District to remain dark and declined to activate other crime-fighting technology, with her administration citing “privacy concerns.” Detectives have been left to plead with the public for footage that the city鈥檚 own tools might have captured, hampering investigations into serious crimes.

The result, according to police union leaders and other critics, is a city that is becoming a “criminal sanctuary.” With officer departures on the rise and surrounding jurisdictions offering genuine police support, Seattle’s approach is driving away the very people needed to keep it safe.

The debate over terminology might seem small, but it captures a deeper divide: whether the city’s leadership is more interested in talking about crime or stopping it.
