Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went after New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft this week, accusing him of coordinating with other stadium operators to shut rapper Macklemore out of venues over his criticism of Israel — a claim that rests largely on internet rumor rather than documented evidence, according to an account published by Breitbart News.
Speaking to TMZ, the congresswoman framed the dispute as a broader question about who gets to decide what ideas reach mass audiences.
“You see what Robert Kraft did to line up all of the stadium [owners] to censor speech in that one specific way; it’s become clear this is not just about one music artist or two music artists,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “This is about how just a handful of stadium owners and the elites could prevent an entire massive issue like the genocide in Gaza [from being discussed].”
She went further, suggesting the same playbook could apply to any controversial subject. “It doesn’t stop there; it could be speaking about AI or any issue,” she said. “You can just get a handful of stadium owners to ensure that an entire person’s career can be jeopardized if they speak out about any issues.”
What Kraft Actually Controls
Kraft’s involvement centers on Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where Macklemore was reportedly blocked from performing. But the congresswoman’s claim that Kraft “lined up” other stadium owners against the rapper has not been substantiated, and no clear evidence has emerged showing how far that alleged coordination extended.
There’s also a structural detail that complicates the censorship argument: Gillette Stadium is privately financed and privately owned through Kraft Sports + Entertainment, a division of the Kraft Group, which Kraft chairs. It is among the few NFL venues built without public money, and Kraft personally holds the land, parking lots, and surrounding infrastructure.
Neither the U.S. Constitution nor Massachusetts law bars a private property owner from declining to host a performer for ideological reasons. The First Amendment’s speech protections constrain government action, not the booking decisions of private businesses.
Kraft, who is Jewish, has become one of the most visible figures in campaigns to combat antisemitism — a context that makes his reluctance to hand over his stadium to a performer who accuses Israel of atrocities less than surprising.
The Counterargument From the Right
OutKick’s Armando Salguero argued that Ocasio-Cortez’s proposed remedy would itself constitute a deeper intrusion on personal rights than anything Kraft is alleged to have done.
“If we live in a country where a Jewish man must open his business to obscene anti-Jewish lunatics spewing lies and hate, then how long before Black business owners must serve customers who are openly and verbally racist at their place of business?” Salguero wrote.
The argument turns the congresswoman’s framing on its head: rather than Kraft violating free speech, compelling him to host speech he objects to on his own property would be the coercive act.

Macklemore had been slated to appear on Ed Sheeran’s upcoming tour, and Sheeran is now working to hold together what remains of the lineup as growing calls for solidarity with Macklemore have prompted some scheduled performers to pull out of their appearances.
The episode sits at the intersection of two escalating fights: the debate over Israel’s conduct in Gaza, which has divided the entertainment industry for months, and a parallel argument over whether private venue owners should be pressured — or compelled — to platform views they find objectionable.
For Ocasio-Cortez, the stadium dispute is evidence of concentrated power among a small group of owners. For Kraft’s defenders, it’s a straightforward property question dressed up as a free-speech crisis. Both sides, for now, are operating with far more rhetoric than documentation about what actually happened behind the scenes.
