Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) accused President Donald Trump of not believing in the country he leads, telling an interviewer that the president is a “failed” leader lashing out at democratic institutions as voters prepare to hold him accountable.
Warnock made the remarks Wednesday during an appearance on MS NOW’s “Deadline,” according to a clip flagged by Breitbart News. The Georgia Democrat’s criticism touched on voting rights, press freedom, the economy and foreign policy, and it came in blunt terms.
‘He doesn’t believe in democracy’
“We have an American president who doesn’t believe in America,” Warnock said. “He doesn’t believe in democracy. And we’re seeing a desperate man trying to hold on to power, and he’s willing to do anything.”
From there, the senator tied a series of administration actions to what he described as political weakness. “This all-out attack on the First Amendment, this attack on voting rights is about a failed president. He’s an abject failure,” Warnock said.
He pointed to the First Amendment in particular, arguing that the president wants to limit the flow of information about government operations. “He doesn’t want journalists to be able to share with us what’s going on in our own government, with our own money,” Warnock said. “And he’s doing everything he can to wage war against our elections.”
The senator did not detail which specific policies or actions he was referring to during the segment, and the clip as reported did not include a response from the White House or from Trump himself.
Pocketbook argument
Much of Warnock’s critique rested on claims about the economy, an issue that has often driven voter sentiment in his home state and nationally. He said Trump campaigned on lowering costs and had not delivered.
“The people of this country, those who voted for him, hired him to lower their costs, lower the cost of groceries, lower the cost of gas,” Warnock said. According to the senator, those voters have instead watched prices “skyrocket” and healthcare premiums double.
Warnock also accused the president of breaking a promise to keep the country out of prolonged conflicts, saying the U.S. is “now eight months into this unlawful war of choice.” He did not name the conflict in the clip.
The combination of economic frustration and the war, in Warnock’s telling, has left the president worried about the electorate. “He knows that the voters are coming,” Warnock said. “And so he’s trying to cut it off at the path.”
Pitch to a purple state
Warnock leaned on his own political background to argue that the president’s approach has costs beyond his base’s opponents.
“I’m from Georgia. It’s a purple state,” he said. “I’ve got Democrat constituents. I’ve got Republican constituents, you know, Republican friends, and he just hasn’t delivered on what he said he would do.”
The comment reflects Georgia’s status as one of the most closely divided states in the country, where statewide races are often decided by narrow margins and where both parties fight over swing voters in the suburbs and smaller cities. Warnock, who has won two statewide races in that environment, framed his criticism as rooted in the experience of representing voters from both parties.
The remarks add to a broader pattern of Democratic pushback against the administration, with elected officials using media appearances to argue that the president is overreaching on multiple fronts at once. Whether that argument gains traction will depend heavily on how voters weigh economic conditions and overseas commitments against other concerns.
The clip circulated quickly after it aired, with the exchange drawing attention as part of the ongoing back-and-forth between the White House and its critics in the Senate.
