Three Dead, Including a 10-Year-Old Boy, After Smuggler Boat Capsizes in English Channel

Two women in their 30s and a 10-year-old boy died Wednesday morning after a smuggler boat capsized off the northern coast of France, according to reports from the scene. The victims were declared dead by a medical team after the vessel, an inflatable ‘taxi’ boat, got into distress near Blériot Plage beach close to the port of Calais.

The boat was reportedly carrying around 105 migrants when it went down. An air ambulance was dispatched, and an emergency medical team attempted to revive the three victims, who were said to have already received medical attention onboard the boat before rescuers arrived. The helicopter crew declared the child and the two women dead at the scene, the BBC reported.

Six rescue boats responded to the incident, and the remaining migrants aboard were landed in Calais. The weather in the Channel was described as good, with calm waters at the time the boat ran into trouble.

A Deadly Smuggling Tactic

The vessel was of the migrant ‘taxi’ type, a method used by smuggling networks in which an inflatable boat travels along the French coast picking up several smaller groups of migrants waiting in the water before heading north toward the United Kingdom, according to Le Figaro. The technique allows traffickers to consolidate multiple groups onto a single craft for the crossing, but it also concentrates risk — Wednesday’s deaths came despite favorable conditions.

The fatalities follow three other deaths in the English Channel last week involving smuggler ‘small boats.’ At least 22 people are known to have died in the Channel this year, according to the United Nations’ International Organisation for Migration.

The IOM estimates around 37,000 migrants have died trying to reach Europe since 2014, a figure that underlines the scale of the broader crisis. European Union-funded news portal InfoMigrants notes that migrants prevented from attempting a Channel crossing are typically dispersed by police, with nothing stopping them from trying again the following day.

Smuggling Gangs Adapt as Crossings Continue

Wednesday’s disaster comes as smuggling operations appear to be growing more organized and more effective, even as the British government points to a drop in arrivals as evidence its approach is working. The average number of people per boat has risen sharply since the start of the crisis in 2020, when a simple inflatable typically carried about a dozen migrants. Today, made-to-order craft sourced from China and smuggled overland through Europe routinely carry more than 60 people per voyage, and arrivals are overwhelmingly male, according to data.

Those larger boats have contributed to record days. On Wednesday last week, 781 migrants arrived by small boat — a record for the year. Over 1,100 are known to have reached Britain by small boat in the past week alone, and more than 18,500 have arrived this year. Data aggregator Migrant Tracker UK puts the total since Labour won the last general election at over 83,000.

The British government is currently paying France three-quarters of a billion Euros to control its own borders and keep migrants away from its England-facing beaches. It points to migrant arrivals to Britain being down over 40 per cent so far this year as evidence the plan is working, though whether the Labour government is essentially taking credit for migrant flows upstream slowing across all of Europe — with a knock-on effect on arrivals — has been debated.

Despite Downing Street’s ‘Smash The Gangs’ rhetoric, those smuggling gangs appear to be consolidating their operations further, with those boats that do arrive being bigger than ever. The return of unintercepted migrant arrivals is also a reminder that undetected arrivals remain possible.
