Swedish Social Democrat Leader Abandons Coalition Talks as Left Bloc Fractures

Magdalena Andersson gave up her mandate to form a government after the Left Party backed a Moderate for Speaker, potentially paving the way for conservative PM Ulf Kristersson to stay in power.

Swedish Social Democrat Leader Abandons Coalition Talks as Left Bloc Fractures

Less than two weeks after a narrow election victory by Sweden’s left-wing bloc, the effort to form a new government in Stockholm has collapsed into open acrimony. Magdalena Andersson, leader of the election-topping Social Democrats and a former prime minister, announced Monday that she sees no viable path to assembling a working coalition, according to reporting from Breitbart’s Europe desk.

Speaking at a press conference, Andersson said she was handing her exploratory mandate back to the Speaker of the Riksdag. “There is currently no possibility for me to form a government,” she said, adding that she was not merely playing for leverage. “This is not about a game of increasing pressure, but I can only state that the Left Party has made a choice. They have chosen to cooperate with the Moderates in this.”

A Speaker Vote That Broke the Bloc

The immediate trigger came earlier Monday, when the socialist Left Party (V) unexpectedly split from its left-bloc allies during the selection of the Riksdag Speaker. Rather than back the Social Democrats’ candidate, Johanna Haraldsson, the Left threw its support behind Andreas Norlén of the centre-right Moderate Party—the same Speaker who served under Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

The Left defended the move as a matter of stability, telling Swedish broadcaster SVT that government formation could drag on and that Norlén’s prior experience in the role made him the steadier choice. Andersson reacted sharply, arguing the largest party in parliament has the traditional right to the Speakership—a post that technically outranks even the prime minister in Sweden’s political hierarchy.

Observers, however, see harder calculations at work. The Left is set to become the second-largest party on the left but has been declared unacceptable in cabinet by the liberal Centre Party, which has ruled out joining a Social Democrat-led government if the Left is given ministerial posts. By demonstrating its willingness to defy its own bloc, the Left appears to be flexing its leverage in that internal fight.

Ties between the two left factions were already frayed. The Left Party’s deputy leader went so far as to call the Social Democrats “fucking cunts” on Sweden’s public broadcaster.

Opening for Kristersson

The breakdown could allow Kristersson to hold onto power even though his Tidö coalition fell short at the polls. The most plausible route would see the Moderate leader reach an agreement with the Centre Party, whose leader Hannes Hervieu has said his party would prefer a Social Democrat-led government but has not ruled out a partnership with the Moderates.

Like the Left on the other side, the Centrists have drawn a hard line against any right-wing government that includes the populist, anti-mass-migration Sweden Democrats. That would require Jimmie Åkesson’s party to stay outside the cabinet and serve as an external support party to keep the left from returning to power. Whether the Centre Party’s other conditions in prospective talks would be acceptable to the right-wing bloc remains an open question.

Sweden’s constitutional machinery now sets the terms. If four attempts to install a new prime minister fail, voters will be sent back to the polls to break the deadlock—a scenario that would extend the uncertainty hanging over one of Europe’s most scrutinized political systems.
