Fresh off her Senate victory, Minnesota's Peggy Flanagan calls for new Democratic leadership, signaling a brewing power struggle with Chuck Schumer.

Peggy Flanagan Urges Democrats to Oust Schumer as Senate Leader After Midterm Wins

Newly elected Minnesota Senator Peggy Flanagan wasted no time shaking up Democratic leadership dynamics, publicly calling Wednesday for Senate Democrats to replace Minority Leader Chuck Schumer just one day after her decisive victory helped secure party control of Congress.

“I am tremendously grateful for Chuck Schumer’s leadership,” Flanagan told reporters at her first post-election news conference, according to the Minnesota Reformer. “But we are in a new movement in this country. Many of us were elected who refused corporate PAC money, who are beholden only to the people who elected us. It’s time for new leadership.”

Progressive Push for Change

The 44-year-old former lieutenant governor pointed to Tuesday’s election results as proof Democrats want bolder change, highlighting incoming senators like Michigan’s Abdulrahman El-Sayed and Illinois’ Juliana Stratton who also oppose Schumer’s continued leadership, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Flanagan’s public challenge comes despite Schumer having maintained broad support among Senate Democrats heading into the midterms, according to October reporting by the Associated Press. The New York Democrat faced some internal criticism in 2025 for backing a Republican spending bill to avoid a government shutdown, but no clear successor had emerged before the elections.

Leadership Vote Looms

Schumer now faces a December leadership vote before the new Congress convenes in January. As of Wednesday, no Democrat had formally announced a challenge, but Flanagan’s remarks could galvanize progressive opposition. If he retains his position, Schumer would regain the majority leader title with Democrats controlling both chambers.

Flanagan secured her Senate seat by a comfortable 10-point margin over Republican Michele Tafoya, capturing 53.7% of the vote in unofficial results from Minnesota’s secretary of state. The win maintains Democratic control of the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Tina Smith.

The incoming senator declined to name a preferred alternative to Schumer, but her comments signal brewing tensions between the Democratic establishment and a new wave of progressives who campaigned on rejecting corporate PAC money and promising more aggressive policy changes.
