A heated dispute between WNBA star A’ja Wilson and a courtside fan during a game escalated into a wild scene that required arena security to restrain and escort a former WNBA player out of the building, according to a report from Breitbart Sports.
The altercation unfolded after Wilson, a star for the Las Vegas Aces, left the playing floor to confront a fan in the second row of courtside seats. Wilson was assessed a technical foul for leaving the floor, but was not ejected. The fan involved was not removed, and the Indiana Fever later released a statement confirming that no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct had occurred.
But the matter did not end there. Sydney Colson, a former teammate of Wilson’s, attempted to go after the fan herself, prompting stadium security to intervene and escort her out of the arena, according to the report. Colson was joined by Theresa Plaisance, another former teammate, and the two were reportedly mic’d up for the game as part of Amazon’s WNBA on Prime coverage.
Video of the confrontation captured Colson shouting at a nearby fan: “Who do you think you are? Bitch, who the f*ck do you think you are?” Meanwhile, Plaisance directed her anger at the male fan who had been arguing with Wilson, calling him a “little bitch boy,” per the Breitbart report.
The incident stemmed from a moment earlier in the game when a fan pointed out Wilson for what the fan viewed as a foul on Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Wilson appeared to take offense at being pointed at and criticized, and she left the floor to confront the fan directly.
According to another nearby spectator, the fan had told Wilson, “It is on you,” referring to the foul. Wilson, however, characterized the fan’s actions as threatening. In her postgame comments, she said: “If I see a man come at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said it, the tone, that is unacceptable. You don’t know me to step toward me and point at me. I’m not for that s–t at all. … That there is unacceptable. How he gets back in the game because they said he didn’t do anything; of course he did.”
The Indiana Fever, however, backed the fan’s account. In a statement, the team said: “Following a report of a comment directed toward a player, arena security spoke with the fan involved and witnesses. Security determined there was no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct; the fan was not removed from the arena. We consider the matter closed.”
The WNBA has not announced any further discipline for Wilson beyond the technical foul, and it is unclear whether Colson or Plaisance will face any consequences for their actions. The league’s fan conduct policies generally prohibit players from entering the stands, though enforcement varies.
Colson and Plaisance, both retired from playing, were working the game in media roles for Amazon’s broadcast. Their outbursts, captured on microphone, raise questions about professionalism for on-air talent. Breitbart noted that given their behavior, it is unlikely the two will be hired by Amazon or anyone else again. Neither Amazon nor the WNBA has commented publicly on their status.
The episode adds to a growing list of confrontations between players and fans in professional sports, where the line between passionate fandom and personal confrontation is increasingly blurred. For the WNBA, which has seen rising viewership and attention, the incident presents a test of how it manages player conduct and fan safety.
Wilson, a two-time MVP and one of the league’s most prominent figures, has not issued an apology for her actions. The Fever’s statement and the fan’s account suggest that Wilson’s characterization of the encounter may have been exaggerated, though the league has not formally addressed that discrepancy.
As of now, the matter appears closed from the Fever’s perspective, but the viral moment continues to spark debate online about player-fan interactions and the responsibilities of both parties.
