Bayer Picks Ohio for $2.2 Billion Pharma Plant as Trump Touts ‘Onshoring Win’

The German life sciences giant will build a pharmaceutical manufacturing campus near Columbus, a project expected to create 1,500 construction jobs and up to 600 permanent roles.

Bayer Picks Ohio for $2.2 Billion Pharma Plant as Trump Touts 'Onshoring Win'

Bayer will invest $2.2 billion in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in New Albany, Ohio, the company announced, landing a major life-sciences project in a state President Donald Trump was scheduled to visit over the weekend.

The investment is described in a company press release as a “central element” of Bayer’s growth strategy, with this first phase focused on the New Albany site near Columbus. Breitbart News reported the announcement on Monday.

Bayer CEO Bill Anderson framed the decision as a deepening of the company’s ties to the United States, which he called a “key manufacturing base and innovation hub.”

“This landmark investment underscores our commitment,” Anderson said in a statement. “The new site will be home to manufacturing expertise and a skilled workforce that will strengthen our ability to deliver innovative, high-quality medicines to patients both in the United States and abroad.”

By the numbers, the project is expected to support roughly 1,500 construction jobs, with as many as 600 “high-value jobs” once the facility is up and running, according to the announcement.

A strategic addition to Bayer’s supply network

Holger Weintritt, who leads Product Supply for Bayer’s Pharmaceuticals division, said the Ohio site would slot into the company’s global manufacturing footprint rather than replace existing operations.

“The facility will be a strong strategic addition to our global Product Supply network,” Weintritt said in the release. “As we continue to invest in our existing manufacturing sites around the globe, our planned presence in Ohio will further enhance our ability to serve our markets with greater resilience and reliability.”

Trump, who was traveling to Ohio to campaign for incumbent Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH), promoted the news on social media before his appearance, calling it “HUGE NEWS FOR OHIO” and saying the campus would generate thousands of jobs in advanced manufacturing, scientific research and construction.

The president tied the announcement directly to his tariff posture on pharmaceuticals, writing that the “massive Onshoring WIN” stemmed from “my strong Pharmaceutical Tariffs, which have led to over 600 BILLION DOLLARS in new Pharma Investments, and lower (MFN) Drug Prices.” He closed the post with a blunt warning to drugmakers — “BUILD IN AMERICA, HIRE AMERICAN WORKERS, AND PRICE DRUGS FOR AMERICAN PATIENTS FAIRLY — OR PAY” — adding, “I LOVE OHIO!”

The White House has consistently pointed to such corporate commitments as evidence its America First economic policies are working, citing $11.2 trillion in combined foreign and domestic investment over the past two years. Bayer’s announcement adds to that tally.

Ohio appearance puts spotlight on midterms

The trip to Ohio doubled as a midterm election rally for Husted, where Trump predicted a strong Republican showing in November.

“We’re gonna win big and we’re going to shove it up their ass,” the president told the crowd, per Breitbart.

Economic concerns have remained near the top of voters’ minds as the midterm elections approach, giving both parties reason to highlight manufacturing and jobs announcements. Bayer’s New Albany project offers Republicans a concrete example of a global company expanding inside the U.S., while the facility’s multi-year buildout means its economic and political effects will unfold well after ballots are counted.

Bayer, headquartered in Germany, operates across pharmaceuticals, consumer health and crop science. The company did not provide a construction timeline or a completion date in its initial announcement, and it was not immediately clear whether additional phases of the Ohio investment would follow beyond the pharmaceutical site described in the release.
