Four students were injured at a New Jersey high school football game over the weekend when a section of the bleachers gave way during a post-game celebration, according to Breitbart News.
The incident unfolded at a matchup between Bergen Catholic High School and Don Bosco Prep, just as Bergen Catholic sealed an upset victory. When several players ran toward the student section to celebrate, the front railing along the bleachers collapsed, sending a crowd of students tumbling forward. Video captured the moment the railing gave out.
At least four students sustained minor injuries, and one was treated on scene for a leg injury. No other serious injuries were reported, per the New York Post.
School Says Fence Between Track and Bleachers Was Compromised
Bergen Catholic High School President Brian Mahoney said the bleachers undergo annual inspections, and the school pledged to examine the structures again before they are used at future events.
“Bergen Catholic is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students, families, staff, and supporters at all school-sponsored events,” Mahoney said in a statement. “At the conclusion of the Bergen Catholic Don Bosco Prep football game, a portion of the metal fence between the track and bleachers was compromised, causing the outside railing to come loose and the fence to collapse. Thankfully, only four students sustained minor injuries and did not require medical attention.”
The school’s statement framed the damage as stemming from a compromised section of the metal fence separating the track from the bleachers, rather than a failure of the seating structure itself. Even so, Bergen Catholic said it would carry out a follow-up review.
“The bleachers are inspected annually, and we will conduct a second thorough inspection of the bleachers and surrounding structures to ensure they can safely be used for future events,” Mahoney said. “The safety and well-being of our students and community remain our highest priority.”
A Celebration That Turned Into a Scare
The scene played out in a familiar sequence for high school sports: a dramatic win, players sprinting toward the stands, students surging to meet them. Then the railing buckled. What was meant as a moment of celebration instead left several teenagers injured and raised immediate questions about the condition of the structures framing the field.
The game itself carried weight in New Jersey’s high school football landscape, pitting two prominent programs against each other. Bergen Catholic’s victory was the kind that often triggers exactly the sort of field-rushing scene that unfolded — and exactly the sort of crowding that can stress railings and fencing not built for a sudden surge of bodies.
What Happens Next
Bergen Catholic has not said when the second inspection will take place or whether any scheduled events could be affected. The school’s statement emphasized that the injured students did not require outside medical treatment, a detail that likely softened the aftermath of an incident that could have been far worse.
For now, the school is pointing to its annual inspection routine while committing to a closer look at both the bleachers and the surrounding structures. Whether that review turns up anything beyond the compromised fence section described in Mahoney’s statement remains to be seen.
Breitbart News noted that video footage circulating online showed the railing coming loose as students pitched forward. The New York Post reported that one student was treated at the scene for a leg injury.
